Searching for Lost Treasure

Searching for Lost Treasure

The Dry Tortugas is a cluster of seven islands 112 kilometers west of Key West, Florida. Surrounded by coral reefs and sandy shoals, this island chain is the graveyard of dozens of sailing ships and their crews. One modern day treasure hunter mounted a search for a Spanish galleon laden with riches that went down near the islands in a hurricane more than three centuries ago. After 16 years of searching, Mel Fisher’s persistence paid off with the discovery of a treasure worth nearly half a billion dollars. VOA’s Tang Ximing has more on Fisher’s salvage expedition and the treasures found.

@Engineer245 10k is way too expensive for a dive with them.

Leave it to government always trying to take someone else’s finds.

I dove the Santa Margarita doing cleanup diving on her and looking for the Atocha in the early 80’s..Looks like someone here forgot to mention that Mel was so eager to get the crews back in the water that he agreed and had signed an agreement to give government half of all treasure he had found until then and got crews back in…A few weeks later courts ruled in mels favour but government got their half anyway and after that it was all mels and his investors
