My introduction to Skagway came when I worked onboard Princess Cruises, and I was surprised to learn that some of the most interesting history is not often talked about. With the ship, there is a variety of tours available, from whale watching to the White Pass Express, and by the time you leave you should be well educated on the boom and bust the gold rush brought to this area of North America. Of course, it is impossible to learn everything in one day, especially when it comes to a place that has seen so much activity over the past 150 years. One of my favourites, is the wreckage of the Bark Canada. You can see the remains of this famous ship at low tide on route to Dyea, which is another fascinating and lesser know part of Skagway history. Both of these locations are accessible after a short drive from Skagway, which I suppose is why they are not available to ship passengers, but if you are visiting with a vehicle, it is well worth the drive. Imagine what could be found in either location if you had a good metal detector.
Skagway is always a pleasure to visit, but this season we wanted to see something new to both of us, so we set our compass in the direction of Haines. Haines is only a short ferry ride away, and that was our original plan, but after seeing the price of the ferry, we opted to drive around. The drive added an extra couple of days to the route, but I couldn’t possibly complain, because the route is amazing. I have always loved the drive down into Skagway, but the drive into Haines might even be better. Another real treat in Haines, is that the marina is very affordable, so putting the boat in was a no brainer. This would be our last chance of the season to fish and crab, so it was an opportunity we would not pass up. Fishing and Crabbing in a new location is always fun, but can often be a little less productive until you find where the critters are hanging out. Lucky for us, we found enough for a beautiful meal.

Dustin, i have to ask what were you eating in Skagway and what is it called? That deep fried flat pastry looks a lot like something i use to eat in Portland Oregon some 40 years ago. It was so delicious, but can’t remember the name. As always your videos are so informative and the landscapes are Magnificent. Keep up the amazing Adventures.

Good for you getting to Haines when it wasn’t on the plan. Nice that the boxes are ticked and there’s still room for adventure before the season is done. 2024 wouldn’t stand out for many reasons weather wise but it has been one of the earliest on and latest out before it gets too cold years
We were in Skagway 3 weeks ago. Down from camping south of Carcross. There were 4 cruise ships in port that day. My version of Hell. I know you did the cruise ship thing before, but for me the commercializations of history is so sad. 20 + jewelry stores on the Main Street. Not the highlight of our Yukon , Alaska journey
Duuude! Great video!! Once small bit of crabbing advice that helped me when I crab in an unknown area…zip tie/wire tie a chicken leg to the outside of your bait box, (inside the pot) so the crab can actually get to it….as one tears into it, it creates more of a scent, others can smell it, they come in crazy for it…and then they have some food that will keep them busy until you pull….its insane! I’ve gotten over 25 dungies (male and female) in pots!! It’s a guaranteed method….there, the secret is out:)

For rockfish our captain would find a rock pile (vertical structure) and we would have our limit very quickly. Hope this tip helps.
Why can you not film in the parks? You pay taxes on your videos… what gives? Is there a law against it or something?

Haines is pretty much paradise! I did a housesit there 15 years ago. The boat trip to Juneau and back remains etched on my mind as a lifetime highlight.

Dustin so nice to see you went into skagway and Dyie? In 1998 we were in the area went to Dyie and looked around and found the old trail up the mt pass i went up part way where the stairs are sat there and closed my eyes and thought of the old timers on there treck up North for Gold get experience . Skagway we stayed in the campgrounds by the cruise ships for 4 days walked all over skagway went on the old Yellowstone tour buses as well and the owner of the fleet of yellow buses invited us to his shop that was cool lots of History anyway thank you for this adventure it reminded me more and more of what we did in the past thank you⛏️😀p.s. and we went on the Skagway train which was awesome . 18:43 that is a Rock Sculpin aka a Bull Head aka Cabezon. The spines are poisonous, and they are definitely a handle with care fish. I never knew you could eat them..

I was in the exact same spot in Dyea you filmed the opening in May 2023. We had the opportunity to go horseback riding through the forest and into the valley. Absolutely gorgeous landscape. As always, thanks for sharing!! Happy Adventures!!
My grandmother’s Uncle James had a goldmine claim near Dawson. He spent winters in the Seattle area and return to Dawson in the spring. He disappeared the year of the great avalanche and family assumes he was one of the victims. The rumor was that though 60-70 bodies were recovered, the number killed was probably closer to 300, the other bodies were left and a memorial was placed near the trail.
