A glass orb treasure hunt on Block Island

A glass orb treasure hunt on Block Island

Since 2012, visitors have scoured Block Island, off the coast of Rhode Island, in search of hidden treasure: hand-blown glass orbs. Correspondent Martha Teichner talks to glass artists Eben Horton and Jennifer Nauck, who create the delicate prizes, and joins other “orbivores” (orb hunters) on the prowl. (Originally broadcast on February 6, 2022.)

We have this in the Quad Cities (Iowa, Illinois) only they’re painted rocks. People are passionate about this hobby of painting, hiding and finding and re-hiding! When you find your first rock, it’s amazing! I would love to find an Orb!

  24. telecasterbear on October 12, 2022 at 8:45 am

They are beautiful…but aren’t they a potential fire hazard? During a hot dry summer couldn’t those orbs act like magnifying glasses, concentrating sunbeams and sparking a fire?

  37. Robert Phillips on October 12, 2022 at 8:55 am

The USS Block Island was the only US Aircraft Carrier to be sunk in the Atlantic Ocean during WW 2.
