We unearthed forgotten treasures lost centuries ago when we visited the island of Alderney in June 2022 after being offered the chance to do some metal detecting there. Over the course of 3 days Jim our host took us to acres of land which was once home to Romans, Celts, Victorians, Georgians and everyone in between. It was exciting, especially knowing that the land had hardly been detected much over the years. My travelling and detecting companions were Simon Bourne of @Si-finds Thames Mudlark and Clem Chambers of @Chill Bill . We were also accompanied by our host Jim, and Ed Staffin, who contributed the awesome drone footage to this video. Ed also has a YouTube channel and you can find it here – @Ed Staffin
As you will see we found some wonderful treasures between us and I would love to know more about the lion brooch (or is it a cap badge?) that I found. Please let me know if you have any suggestions as to what it used to be!
Not only is Alderney rich in history, but it is also a haven for beautiful wildlife. We visit Gannet Rock to see the gannet colony, thanks to Ed Staffin’s super drone footage, and there is also wonderful footage of a baitball and dolphins at the end of this video. Dont miss it!

It’s the third largest channel island after Jersey and Guernsey, and it’s 1.5 miles wide – and 3.5 miles long. Perfect. A peaceful place to escape the busy life of London that is for sure!

To the best of my recollection Nic, it is "freshly mown" grass. Awesome drone footage!

If it is Bronze it could be a Roman Phalerae ? (Decorative Boss worn over armour- a bit like campaign medals in later military) As its Not any cap badge that I know of.
I think "The Brighton Badger" may have the correct answer though Two bosses with heads facing inwards with a fastening chain.

I’ve seen Gannets out to sea flying past the New Jersey Shore with a spotting scope,and my wife and I saw colonies on
Bonventure Island in Nova Scotia along with kittiwakes and Black Guillemots back in the 70’s.
We also saw Puffins on a boat trip when we visited Prince Edward Island,
But Alderney is amazingly rich in History and Nature.

When the drone was over the gannets, I could swear I heard a phone ringing.🤣 I hope Jim found his, they are like losing a wallet anymore. I think the finds must really make you want to go back for more, best of all it must have been a good time with everyone else there!

If you had his phone number you could have rang his phone and listened out for it. I love the Wombles. Sometimes I walk around my house singing Wombles of Wimbledon and my kids say watch out she’s visiting her childhood again, love them. Some beautiful finds today, very interesting too.

An idyllic little island. Being Australian, the water would be FAR too cold for me to go swimming in.
For Si, 1770 is King George III, not George II.
The badge you found at 39.00 was a GPO badge that would have been worn by a postman on his collar and/or cap.
