Mysterious rock structure found in Tennessee.

Mysterious rock structure found in Tennessee.

Went out on a scouting trip yesterday with my metal detector, and found a mysterious rock structure. Found a civil war breastplate, silver thimble and a lot more.

That "broken horse shoe" looks more like a latch hook for a door or a chest to me. It looks as if there is a pin in the center portion where it could pivot. I don’t know, just a thought

Great find! I had to actually look it up to see what they were. I’m sure I’ve seen them 1000 times in photos, but never really noticed. https://www.loc.gov/resource/ppmsca.37066/

It’s too bad people chose it to litter. I’m from middle TN and in my woods there’s a large hole on a hill around 5 or 6 feet deep. There’s a partial foundation, many, many bricks, pieces of brick, some that look burnt. Many of the old square nails, colored glass. There’s also a long stone wall and near that are a few piles of stones next to each other. I found horseshoes, many of those nails, a porcelain top to a fruit jar. In my yard I have found plenty of melted lead, including a good chunk of one. I know metal detecting takes patience, especially when you find junk. We might look odd to other people but I guess they don’t understand the enjoyment of doing it. Anyone that has an interest in metal detecting, I highly recommend a pinpointer. It will make things a lot easier!

I started metal detecting in 2012 and found a forum you might like. It’s the Friendly Metal Detecting Forum. It’s a nice community. https://metaldetectingforum.com/

Gee, I guess my idea that its a service pit for covered wagons is shot to hell now. Approximately what part of Tenn. is that?
