Treasure Hunting at Dead Horse Bay in New York – Mudlarking & History Hunting with @IndianaTones
The shores of Dead Horse Bay in Brooklyn are scattered with forgotten treasures from the past. In May 2022 I went searching there with New York detectorist and History Hunter @IndianaTones and we found a variety of miscellaneous objects once owned by New Yorkers decades ago. One thing that struck me in particular during this outing, was the abundance of old toys that end up on the banks of Dead Horse Bay – very similar to the Thames. There’s always something poignant about finding old toys – particularly when the children who played with them are almost certainly no longer with us. We also found a few objects which took some identifying! It’s always fun to have some mystery finds.
Thank you to Louis DeFoe for taking me out on this beautiful misty day to Dead Horse Bay. Louis also searches for lost jewellery for people and then returns it to them.
Thank you for watching. Please like and subscribe if you enjoyed this video and do go on over to see Louis’s channel. He has some great content.
Thank you.

I don’t think there are any mudlarking rules in the US. Probably a relativley low margin of interesting older findes compared to the UK, but different, ya?
Public School 8 🙂
Talk about a cast-iron shore, yeah.
right after you found that first wheat penny you found an old police badge, thats cool!!!!!
if your doing that in new-york it should be called Crudlarking
That is a lady leg knife. I bought my son an identical one several years ago. Nice finds!
That little round piece that’s all broken up is for checking spacing when doing a tune-up or timing I think
Amazing video so interesting,
That Washington coin may be a worn-out Washington quarter
You have a police badge
That was Patty Duke in the toy commercial.
Also the faded coin is possibly a 1700’s King George large cent…
All all the bottles old also? Or is that new garbage? If old why are they not being collected as antiques?
I remember when i watched this initially i had a dream that night that I figured out what that ring meant, and people were after me who knew that I knew what the ring meant, and I had the dream again since and I have such a feeling of De Ja Vu right now. I can remember bits of the dream that are so ephemeral.
How much money could a scrap yard make trolling that beach? $$$$$
New Youk, just like i pictured it !
Paint or tape your trowel bright orange do your don’t loose or
I collect marbles but I have never seen a plain clear one, looks almost like a tiny crystal ball!
Brooklyn was one of the first towns built in what would become NYC. The poet Walt Whitman – 1800s – was born in Brooklyn. Book of poems – Leaves of Grass.
So many delightful finds in NYC. Thanks for your lovely videos. Love the inclusion of the natural sights and sounds.
I just got home from Hudson Yards in Manhattan. Couldn’t wait to catch this. Such a great production and detail to highlight this day. Thank you Nicola, I had a great day mudlarking New York City with you!
Patty Duke!!!!❤
I enjoyed your video, and all the treasures u both found.
You could use a bright fluorescent colour paint, on ur fork or some kind of bright thing? To help u find them lol maybe
Just a thought.
If I’m right I think that’s a medallion from the 1770s with George Washington’s head on it they were commemorative one hell of a find
Possible transition for the ring you z eyes the z stands for see.
7:40 believe that is a police badge
The heeled knife, so you can stab someone, like a lady!
All those broken bottles is depressing they look like their only from the 30s – 40s… not worth collecting I’d love to see people start cleaning the beach of them & run a big magnet over all that sharp dangerous steel.
If you are ever in the NYC area again I’ve got a great spot for you in South Jersey. It requires snorkeling, but very satisfying. TpB
The palm trees pendant, I have one just a like it. It was used for Civil War Reenactments as a Confederate pin placed on top of a kepi hat. It’s symbol used for Florida Confederate troops.
Great show , Loved the old commercials too .
OM gosh, thank you for the trip down memory lane…. live the toys
Great video… sad in a way as well. We’re looking at the results of a few hundred years of human presence. Apparently the generation before ours left behind a lot of glass and metal. All we’ll leave behind is a ton of plastic. Sometimes, I shake my head at what we’ve become.
@7:32 is an old police badge
I’m happy you had a great time…. it’s just shocking to see New York not taking care of their beaches and waterways, South Louisiana has hurricanes several times a year and our beaches and waterways look pristine in comparison. Just really sad.
Patty Duke was the little girl in the penny machine commercial
Louis’ ring at 28:56 looks like an Oddfellows artifact.
A machinest clamp there to left of your hand at 4:39. A relatively expensive tool back then.
💚
The little boy with the horse is just adorable, playing cowboys kept the boys so busy at one time.
That one item is a fragment of a old style special police badge.
The litter is a disgrace. Poor animals navigating through the rubbish
I was under the impression that the bay has been closed for the past couple of years. Is it open now?
At 40:37 Patty Duke the Oscar winner actress who play Hellen Keller in a movie and had her own TV show in the 1960’s she play identicle cousins, one from Britain one from Brooklyn ! Patty Duke Show lol Her son played a hobbit in Lord of the Rings.
You found a police badge
Maybe paint the shovel/rake handle or tie some ribbon on it. 🙂
Its 90% human crap and 10% nature. And now its almost everywhere that way.
Glad you got out or New York with your life !
Keep an eye out in the American cents you find a copper 1943 wheat penny can bring you hundreds of thousands of $$ even others can be ause of errors 1922 or a 1955 wheat bring big money , even certain Kennedy half dollars bring money for double stamp errors. Never know what you will find.
I wonder if that enamel pin is" Public School #8"? A lot of public schools in the US were just numbered. Great video as usual. Thanks Nicola!
