Shipwrecks, Treasure and Cannon Fire: The True Story of an American Privateer
Shipwrecks, Treasure and Cannon Fire: The True Story of an American Privateer
Compared with better-known stories of the Founding Fathers who, author and regular Reason contributor Jackson Kuhl note, “don’t do much,” the story of privateer Samuel Smedley is brimming with action. His new book, “Samuel Smedley, Connecticut Privateer,” delves into this true-life tale of revolution, shipwrecks, treasure and cannon fire.
Reason.tv’s Nick Gillespie sat down with the author to talk about Smedley, America’s fascination with Revolutionary War biographies and Kuhl’s desire for a film franchise.

Don’t settle for 33% ReasonTV, undercut and sweep the rug! I have no idea what I’m saying…
Even then the government would prefer 66% of nothing rather than 50% of something.
So, just give letters of Marque to ships to go after the somalia pirates and hey presto. no more somalian pirates. ,-)
Haha the founding fathers did didn’t really do anything? You make me laugh.
This guy is talking about shipwrecks and treasure…. Give him some dreadlocks and ditch the glasses and it’s Johnny Depp from Pirates of the Caribbean
Two words: FRANCIS DRAKE
Mr. Smedley, thank you for being a pain in the side of an unelected british monarch!
He’s literally my ancestor
Well I found this, this Samuel is my GGGGGG Grandfathers nephew, my name is William Smedley. I’ve researched Samuel a bit myself, quite a few stories in a family tree. I love this one is one of my favorites. Thanks for sharing, would love to know how your doing, and how the book has gone.
So many amazing stories from history that would make for amazing movies. Instead all Hollywood is interested in is spending 150 million adapting every single comic book ever written. Can’t wait to see The Beige Lantern and Above-Average man come to the silver screen.
