Finding Thomsonite | A Minnesota Treasure | A Rare Zeolite

Finding Thomsonite | A Minnesota Treasure | A Rare Zeolite

As we head up the North Shore of Minnesota, we are in search of a very rare zeolite called Thomsonite. Typically, I rockhound for other minerals like Lake Superior agates, jasper, prehnite, etc., and have had a lot of experience in finding those minerals! This adventure where we are in search of Thomsonite, is my first official hunt for this beautiful treasure. We had some great luck but I can say I am not completely satisfied and even though we found some gorgeous treasures, I plan to go back and find more! If you want to learn more about Thomsonite, please see these links below:

  6. Ioan Șteopoaie on May 19, 2023 at 8:32 am

Wow. The first thomsonite that you found is exactly the shape of a ring. Wonder if you still got it and reckon is a good idea to drill a hole in the host rock and polish the top?

  7. Terri Radke on May 19, 2023 at 8:34 am

Did you tumble these at all? Or, would you tumble these as they are so small? But I don’t see any sharp edges. Are they naturally soft shaped? Sorry if my question is stupid, but I am a newbie. Thank You!

Love your channel, you and Rob from Michigan Rocks are my favorites. You both have premium channels. You both are my go to for knowledge on rocks, you don’t profess to be experts, but you got my vote for being the best! I discovered your channel by watching Rob’s.

Good day Agate Dad. I’m still slowly watching your videos. Only 8 months behind you. I will catch up some day! We stayed near that beach this past September. As I was preparing for some picking, was researching on my mobile device in the hotel, and that is how I found this channel. I watched your video, which helped us find a few pieces. My spouse found a gorgeous piece that was not attached to any host rock. Anyways, me researching Thomsonite is how I stumbled onto your channel. And I started watching way back from Day 1. Probably have 40-50 videos to watch to get completely caught up. Keep up the great work my man and hopefully I can meet you this August or September for a combo of trout/hounding. Peace out. DanO

  26. Joseph Kerley on May 19, 2023 at 9:00 am

  27. Phyllis Williams on May 19, 2023 at 9:00 am

Found you from Northern Mudlarks’ recommendation!

  31. patricia mckean on May 19, 2023 at 9:03 am

Such beautiful minerals…even though small and on host rocks. I often wonder what cause certain things to occur in nature πŸ€”

  32. Joyce Shotwell on May 19, 2023 at 9:05 am

Agate Dad, Northern Mudlarks recommended you. Love this video. Love those bands. What exactly is the scoopie tool you were using? Where can I get one?

  33. C C on May 19, 2023 at 9:06 am

    Hi again!
Catching up now on your vids and found this one that really brought back those memories I spoke of. That area is soo beautiful and special and does have many treasures ready to be found. On your quest for the more rare you still found some interesting pieces. Must say your map underlay for display is a way cool idea! So enjoy your vids also because your nature photography is wonderful and really expands yet compliments your hunts. Nice job! I’ll catch up eventually but in the meantime thx so much for sharing.

  34. Heather Lawrence on May 19, 2023 at 9:08 am

    Nice finds!

  35. Silverback on May 19, 2023 at 9:08 am

Howareya Taylor, ripper little agates, when you said you were going to cut the small agate I was trying to let you know to try the Dremmel, but you weren’t taking notice of " the force". πŸ˜œπŸ˜‚. More seriously would a Dremmel be an option to remove the material on the top of those agates as it looks on video that those agates growths appear to have height/depth in the growth and by cutting them it might remove to much material. Very interesting looking agates, I hope you find a larger piece for us to look at. I was wondering if there might be more available under water were fewer people are prepared to search for them unless they have a glass bottom boat.
Are those agates washed in from a outcrop offshore or are they from onshore and then eroded onto the shore line. An interesting agate that certainly makes you start thinking if they are so localised.
Maybe you can go for dive and have a look underwater, I’ve always wondered what a "Taylor Popsicle" would look like. πŸ˜œπŸ˜….
    Keep Safe & Keep Rockin.

the thompsonite i have is green red and white. its a tiny piece i happened to get at a garage sale. i have yet to try to find my own naturally. im in the twin cities and dont drive so the trip that far north is hard for me to make. but i do alot of agate hunting in the cities here in just landscape rocks and construction sites.

    βœ‹Hallo.., Im from Indonesia.

Thompsonsite beach was always a stop on our way to Grand Marais. I have a small container of them collected in the 50s & 60s.they have beautiful eyes, that creamy pink banding and are quite large. They should be roundish in their complete form. A little hint, I used to hike into the hills. You can still find larger stones imbedded in the granite across the roadπŸ˜‰

  39. Espresso Dave on May 19, 2023 at 9:18 am

Do all the rocks on Superior, just work there way to the shores or? God sure made many beautiful rocks! Thanks.

  46. Velma Munoz on May 19, 2023 at 9:22 am

Heading up to Grand Marais area in Aug 2021. Just made my reservation for motels. Can’t wait to go up. Hope to be lucky and find some cool specimens.

Man that stuff is just awesome! I had never heard of thomsonite before this, too cool! Looking forward to see some more! IDK why but it kinda reminds me of Larimar, just pink instead of blue. Awesome hunt!
