Roald Dahl, Mildenhall Treasure, audiobook, free short story read by Nick Martin
A true story set in England in the 1940s, suitable for all ages.
By request – no music on this one!
Mildenhall is very familiar to me (as it would be to anyone who was in The US Air Force for any length of time), but I was not aware this story until now. I spent many months in and around the base back in the 80’s and 90’s, probably very near to where the treasure was discovered.
Very interesting indeed.
34.31 ish… Ongoing the law regarding treasure trove etc.
Anyone who doesn’t know , listen , absorb …
I spent the summer of 1973 on Isleham fen just over the river from Mildenhall Airfield. This area is full of history. Thank you Mr. Dahl. What a story!
Absolutely wonderful Nick. Thank you. Although I did keep expecting Jeeves to make an appearance with your P G Wodehouse collection. Thank you for many enjoyable hours!🙋🏻Jo
LOVED THIS. Anybody else notice that it sounds totally like Bill Nighy’s voice??
the treasure is really real, wow!
Extremely well read ….I always enjoy Dahl
Simply amazing story, thank you.
If this had been a fictional Dahl piece, the farmer might have bumped off the good prof with a frozen leg of lamb.
Very awesome book
Your Suffolk accent isn’t really very good
Superb.
Very enjoyable thank you.
There used to be a US forces camp in Mildenhall. Thank you for this story. 🌸🌷💐
Utterly captivating on all levels, ha ha!!
Many thanks to those who made this story available!!
Never ceases to suprise me how the govenment feel the need to do over the poor. 1000 is disgusting. What a lovely short story though thank you
Many thanks for your amazing storytelling 😊
I’m a little surprised that there is no comment about the Roman hoard found near the other Mildenhall (in Wiltshire, UK), the Cunetio Hoard. It was discovered in 1978 ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cunetio_Hoard ) and the Roman town was excavated by Time Team in 2009 ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hdPPgae84o ).
Great story just amazing and funny too, thank you for uploading …Roald Dahl you are the best!
The reader did a superb job. His voice fit this so very well, and the voices he did were great for the characters he was portraying.
And leave it to Dahl to make the story so tellable, and so engaging.
Very good story. As a not native English speaker I was able to enjoy it because your pronunciation is clear and easy on the ears. Thank you!
Thank Heaven – no irritating music! Wonderful story – well read and entertaining.
I’ve lived in mildenhall all my life also metel detected all around lakenheath Mildenhall I’ve found lots Roman stuff loads Anglo Saxon I’ve gave to local museum plus bury st Edmunds the government does want u to look fr treasure as thy think it belongs to them and not the people ,so sad mildenhall treasure is a lovely sight what a find …saying that the actual farmer who,s land this was found in was as tight as ducks ass …
Absolutely fantastic thank you I loved it
Oh!! Dahl what a wonderful story. I love your books. A very gifted writer. My children were bought up reading your books ♥️👶
I’m always amazed by R. Dahl. From Willy Wonka to Lamb to the Slaughter. What a range.
Wow i so enjoyed this wonderful story. You are a wonderful writer…
Thank you immensely 👍🙏
Thank you so much. What a sanity-saver you are for lockdown! <3
The Saturday Evening Post was the most high-paying magazine market in the US, back when Dahl wrote this and for many decades afterward. So half of that kind of money was a pretty good deal, and the exchange rate of UK to US money back then would have made it really good. No wonder Dahl could live on two short stories a year, if he was already selling to the Saturday Evening Post.
bravo to the reader. but storywise I was expecting a twist that never came
You’re a delightful reader. I’m an American, and I’ve listened to work on the BBC since I discovered The Goon Show at 12. I like your inclusion of regional voices. Thanks VERY much.
Made a straight forward story really come alive! Wonderful performance, thank you!
What a wonderful story. Thank you….
Very well read, what a difference it makes. Thank you very much, sir.
Thank you for sharing this story with us!
Does anyone know why the paperback and hardback book versions of this are so expensive? I’m not sure about other countries but, here in the UK it is. 🤔😢
Thank you
Wonderfully read , really enjoyed this!
Just IMAGINE the treasures that will come out of hiding to be proudly displayed for THE WORLD to see when da gubmit stays in it’s lane and stops taking things from us(the PEOPLE) that doesn’t belong to them. & if you don’t agree with "finders keepers," get off your dead butt and FIND ME SOME TREASURE. I’ll letcha work for me for free! …because I do SO MUCH FOR YOU. I’m not getting PAID ENOUGH to mind your business FOR you. (I’m da grammer polize, lmao- DO AS I SAY, NOT AS I DO. Just because I know the difference between what is right or wrong don’ mean I got to do right if there’s money involved… LESSON #1 TO YOUR CHILLUNS: ADOPT THE GUBMINT PLAN; they’ll be richer for it) (& if you think you have some right to what’s in my house, let’s just see what I want out of YOURS FIRST.
A very interesting story, beautifully read!
Many thanks!
much love 🙂
Great story, amazing narration!! Thank you! 👏
What a beautiful narration. Thank you for sharing…
I lived near mildenhall for most of my life. And Roald Dahl is my favourite childhood author, so its amazing to hear his story about the Mildenhall treasure!
And, the moral of this story is NEVER under any circumstances trust museums or the organs of the establishment. They robbed both Butcher and Ford of the real value on a technicality – personally I would pitch it into the sea as soon as let the Museums have it almost gratis!
Magnificent find…4th century! I actually just google searched the silver items, they are beautiful. Wow!! Didnt even know about this until I listened to your audiobook, thanks for the gem of knowledge.
That’s not at all how it should have ended. Ending should be "when the doctor bent down to grasp the findings in the sideboard he was struck down by Ford’s heaving the largest of the silver plates onto his head like a frisbee."
