In this video we will Discuss the legend and American Indigenous story of the Piasa Bird (Dragon). The Monster of the Alton Bluffs on the Mississippi River.
We will be reading from Chapter 1 , 2 & 3 of the book: “Records of ancient races in the Mississippi Valley; being an account of some of the pictographs, sculptured hieroglyphs, symbolic devices, emblems and traditions of the prehistoric races of America, with some suggestions as to their origin” by William McAdams.

Thank you for making this video, I live less than 20 minutes from this sacred sight and have gone to and awed at the Great paiting of the Piassa. It’s crazy I’ve never heard the full legend but that’s amazing and I have a semi-difficult spot to access in the park that’s upon a cliff side of the cave and have always held my own offerings and rituals honoring the great spirits and ancestors of this land I’ve always felt a deep spiritual & emotional connection to the beautiful culture that’s been build over & forgotten, and with that a great sadness and eerie nostalgia as I have felt a deep vocation since I was very young to honor and not let their wonderous nature-intuned shamanic truths be forgotten. And being much older and having these sacred places so close, my life has been greatly effected and in whatever way it may be so, I still plan to aid in fulfilling my young self’s vocation, and like yourself am headed in the direction to do so!

The story about the Dakotas is mistaken identity. The “Paisa Bird” is a wingless serpent that inhabits the waters. The thunder birds inhabit the mounds and mountains, which is their perch. The water serpents are in a continuous war with the thunder birds. Similar to the Indian Epics, Indra, god of thunder, battled Vritra, the great Serpent, to release the waters.

Wussup ! Great show . Yeah I live in StL County , when I was a teen , we used to go to different places at night and party . One of the places we’d go is the cave , now it’s called the Piasa Cave , it’s where they have that painting . In the 80’s they didn’t recognize that place , it was just derelict . The coolest part was , there was a trail that went up to the bluff , and on the top there was a throne carved into the rock . It’ looks out over the river . It was pretty big , yeah I can’t see it on maps . Thanks !

Hence the human face of these birds. I was born and raised in area also and I never liked field trips going to see the Piasa bird. It was unsettling. I live on the Bluffs near the Piasa Bird ,not far from Piasa Creek. Me and a friend were just in the Piasa Caves where the bird was thought to live.

Unfortunately, the original petroglyph has never been preserved. The one we see with wings is a copy. The original did not mention wings. The serpent bears remarkable similarities to the Sumerian dragon Mushushu, and ironically, one of the Algonquin names for this serpent is Mishipeshu. The name “Paisa bird” is a European invention.

🤔 it interesting how the Piasa bird looks very similar to the dragons of Japanese and Chinese lore. It’s also similar to the dragons of the Aztec peoples as well as those the early Persian people.
Awesome!!! If you Google Earth the eastcoast of US you’ll see the great dragon. It’s mouth is Louisiana and the Gulf is what came from its mouth.
