Vardzia Caves is a remarkable historical site nestled in the rugged landscape of Georgia. Legend tells that its name derives from one day the Queen Tamar went out hunting with her uncle Giorgi and got lost in the caves. When Giorgi called out to her, she replied “aq var dzia”, which is Georgian for “I’m here uncle”.

Vardzia’s natural setting adds to its mystique and splendor. The caves are perched at an elevation, allowing visitors to enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. The picturesque Kura River meanders through the valley below, enhancing the scenic beauty of the area.

The site’s historical significance extends beyond its military role. In the 1180s, Vardzia underwent a major transformation under the reign of Queen Tamar, who expanded the complex into a monastic community and a cultural center. It became a sanctuary for Christian monks, scholars, and pilgrims, housing numerous churches, chapels, and religious facilities. One of the most notable features is the Church of the Dormition, a stunning example of medieval Georgian architecture adorned with beautiful frescoes depicting religious scenes.
