Buried Treasure Found Off The Coast Of Normandy Beach
Construction workers in Brick Township, New Jersey that were building a seawall, may have uncovered some buried treasure!
Brick Township’s Deputy Office of Emergency Management Coordinator Joe Pawlowicz says the crew was installing the steel seawall when they struck something in the ground that actually broke one of their machines.
“They came across an object that was about 20-feet down in the ground. They decided to dig up to see what they were hitting and they unveiled it as possibly a ship,” Pawlowicz explained
Director of the New Jersey Ship Wreck Museum, Dan Lieb, believes the wreck to be the Ayrshire, which ran aground off the coast of Squan Beach, which is now Normandy Beach during a super storm in the 1850s.
According to Lieb, the Garden State actually has a rich history of ship wrecks, but this one was never found. Lieb says the Ayrshire had a windlass, which was used during that time period to raise the anchor or pull in heavy lines. This object was recovered when the construction workers dug up the ship.
