How Do We Recover El Dorado's Sunken Treasure? | Witness | American Colonial History Documentary HD
Faced with an ever-growing demand for precious metals and dwindling extraction sites, the world’s oceans are being seen as a new Eldorado. Thousands of shipwrecks litter the ocean floor with cargoes of these ’precious metals’. With today’s technology, this treasure is in reach.
Underwater archaeology has revealed that 3 million shipwrecks litter the ocean floor, 3,500 of which sunk with cargoes of gold, silver and porcelain onboard. Billions of dollars worth of this material, just sitting there, at the bottom of the sea. With today’s technology, this gold is in reach.
But how can this sunken treasure be recovered? And who has the right to do so? The nation whose territorial waters host the wreck? The country plundered years ago for its resources? Or indeed humanity, as advertised by UNESCO? Between diplomatic battles and great buccaneers, this international investigation uncovers a new gold rush.
This documentary was first released in 2019.

GREED AND STUPIDITY ARE ABOUT TO BE THE END OF HUMANITY. MAYBE YOU SHOULD LEAVE IT THERE.
Governments are happy to sell off mining rights to the highest bidder and have the earth raped to extract rare earth minerals, but get all precious about people wanting to retrieve some old crockery from the bottom of the ocean…. oh, please!
The Spanish, speaking, fellow, literally sounds like he has gobs of ccock sausage in his mouth while he speaks
So people recovering and preserving history are the problem? Nope we can all see it’s jealousy that’s the problem. Fuckin puke politicians
Leave it to historians and archaeologists to wait until treasure hunters spend their lives to find some thing and then try to jump on it as if it were theirs lol.
There’s a reason nobody likes you guys, you don’t go find your own work… And when you do, the outcome is predetermined by the institution that pays you, what a joke
I’ve figured out the lauriers map and deciphered the code it’s really easy actually and a lot easier then people realize…at least in my opinion I think it was. I figured it out in two seconds the locations but spent hours deciding if I should or not. Lmao
BUT IT IS NOT BELONGING TO SPAIN. IT BELONGS TO THE COLOMBIANS OR PERUVIENS ALL THE GEMS AND GOLD ETC.
A poor country just locking this stuff away in a dungeon . Just keeping the people in poverty ,Is also a crime .Those in charge will most likely have a good wage paid for by the poor.
Most Govenments are a pack of rouges. Spanish Museum displaying a small portion of the coins, then hides the other 400 million in silver.
That money cd be used to help the country but its hidden for the mental gratification of a few members of parliment. Claiming military sentiment.. If these business men "politians were actively trying to recover their national wreak then that fine, but doing nothing and then hearing some people have worked their arses off to resurface a Spanish wreak that been their for that long and then say "oh thats ours" as if they were looking for it too. They probably didnt even know it existed b4..
Plain old fashion greed and power, nothing more.
Let them bring it up, give a portion the the Govenment/museum and let them keep the rest.
Spain, Italy, Brizal, Mexico have one thing in common, The RCC! and that treasure belongs to the Pope, who controls the government’s!!!
Treasure hunting seems so fun😊
That’s awesome they’ve found that ship and all the expensive stuff aboard it
The Spanish are unbelievable lol. They stole it multiple times first from the poor Central American tribes hundreds of years ago and now from the salvage companies. What other situation do you get to say, we stole it back in the day so we still own it now. 😂😂
If I find its mine idgaf who claims it. They want it then they can give me what it’s worth plus the money I spent finding and collecting it. I’d hide it all
Instead of a box make a large like floating lense that covers more area or lenseS that would quicken the process
If the gold should go to the original owner … all that gold should go to the Aztec’s which is now Mexico. Especially since we all know that gold was "stolen!"
Wish the Spaniards and other european monarchs had this same principles…
Don’t pillage other countrie’s valuables..
Leave them where they are… Leave the peopless….
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Spain wants to claim ownership but they’re not prepared to do anything to salvage these articles of interest its disgusting sit back and claim ownership when the works been done by someone else its theft
This is wrong, they state heritage yet it would still be at the bottom of the sea right now if Odyssey had not spent millions of their own money finding and retrieving it, at the very minimum the Spanish Government should pay them cost plus a percentage of its worth!
10 years?!
As an archeologyst there is a huge battle and idk i know all the rules and regulations. But these conditions are not manintaiable anymore. I think Museums should be claiming onlie a part and the most precious part of a founding if it wasnt a museum Dig. And the founder can keep the rest. You know it would motivate museums to improve their digs so others cant get away and it motivates treasure hunters as well since they can keep a portion of their finds
Lost Treasure of the new world😂.😂😂😂😂 8 and 1/2 years you’re going to get a new world when the old world dies in cremation. Hakuna Matata the truth shall set you free.😂😂😂😂
Listen to the hypocrisy, how many people did Spain inslave and who died when they stole every grain of that gold . Trade goods 😂 what a joke it’s stolen booty
One inch to the south and America wouldn’t have said a dang thing as they grave rob my ancestors in Africa without any backlash.
But, it’s a big BUT, the treasure doesn’t belong to the Spaniards, THEY STOLE THE TREASURE FROM LATIN AMERICA, SO? who has the right to the treasure???
It must be illegal to speak English on a documentary in France or something cuz these frogs refuse to do it, and we know they can.
bring it all up from the bottom of the sea so it can be seen by all leave nothing behind and money should be allocated for that purpose.
I’d help any big investor find a treasure and a shipwreck that would be awesome and life dream come true, name the one I’ll find it LOL…..for an equal portion of it that is!
So wait they punish and demonize the people who find the treasures????
And by the way, unless that military ship is making golden cannonballs… It’s not a military ship. It’s a ship, filled with thieves, and open to public salvage!
Spain is fighting to claim riches THAT THEY PLUNDERED, LOOTED, AND MURDERED to get ! OUTRAGEOUS !!
After hearing that lawyer bitch about that company mailing all the treasure to Tampa. All I could think about was. After how many years all that treasure has been sitting at the bottom of the ocean, and the moment someone goes down and finally brings it back to the surface everyone wants to start claiming rights to the booty. I would have respectfully gone back to the location that I found the treasure and throw it all overboard and respectfully tell them "Here’s your treasure back."
Should be finders keepers! If these people didn’t go find it,it would just stay there so….
Lots of people claim treasure belongs to the indigenous people. Not under international law. The salvors know this before they dive for treasure.
The many organizations that are fighting over the shipwrecks are just like Grandma’s little aphorism:" dog in the manger!" Dog doesn’t eat hay but, will not permit the cows to get at the hay!!!
Acadamia can Phk OFF, Finders Keepers.
The past is the past! It belongs to whoever can recover it. UNESCO sounds more like jealous little children than people are actually interested in preserving history. Look at the titanic, yeah oh yeah, let’s protect it. No one touch it… Now it’s crumbling, and will forever be lost. It just doesn’t sit at the bottom of the ocean like a preserved historical artifact, the ocean consumes. Treasure hunters have the desire, and the financial iinitiative to make the effort to risk their lives and their financial future to recover the treasure. Much of this treasure is historical and will find its way Into museums and so forth that will record its history, as opposed to be a lost forever. For the rest, that has actual financial value, because of that financial value and historical value, it will preserved as well. Salvage belongs to the salvor. Not to those who sit in their little history, classrooms, or political offices in their comfy little arm chairs, and try to dictate what other should do with the results of their efforts.
So the Spanish plundered the south and central Americas yet when a modern American finds a ship full of Spanish gold coins that would have been lost for eternity (and are almost certainly made from smelted gold robbed from the Americas) they squeal like little pigs. How ironic. It should have been sold. All of it. Spain deserve none of it.
lol the Spanish stole all that gold and treasure from the new world and claimed it’s there culture heritage on a military ship and to go into a museum.thats funny,it should go back to the culture they stole it from or at the very least divide it up to the people of the country there now.
This has got to be the stupidest idea I’ve ever heard. So this company spends 10 years and millions of dollars to extract this treasure and get nothing? They should have been allowed to throw it back in the ocean. This idea that “cultural history” belongs to archaeologists only is absurd. You can’t get to it. It will eventually become unrecoverable. So why let that happen?
Look, a military ship that stole gold and silver ect. From other people!, They have no rights to it.😊
I love how the Spanish waited until the treasure was surfaced then claimed it. Genius. If they would have started the legal battle prior to it being on the dock the American treasure hunters would have left it at the bottom.
How do you preserve something for future generations by leaving it underwater and eventually rot away, crazy let those who can recover them reserve some for museums while making profit, commercial fishing is destroying this treasures anyway
Instead of a box make a large like floating lense that covers more area or lenseS that would quicken the process like how oil rigs float with big propellers and just program it like an automatic vaccum machine goes around the floor to pick up crumbs an dirt…lol
