William Augustus Bowles & the Treasure of the Money Pond (Pt. 1: Pirate of the Three Rivers)

In Part 1 of William Augustus Bowles & the Treasure of the Money Pond, we look at the life of this real pirate of the Florida Gulf Coast! Learn the true story of the Pirate of the Three Rivers as we explore the tale of the adventurer and pirate who attempted to establish a “nation state” centered on the Apalachicola, Chattahoochee, and Flint Rivers in today’s Northwest Florida, Southwest Georgia, and Southeast Alabama.

Bowles is a true figure from history who is tied to some of the Florida Panhandle’s most enduring treasure stories. The most notable of these is the Legend of the Money Pond – some call it the “seven ponies treasure” – in Jackson County, Florida. Let’s face it, no one knows the area where this treasure is supposed to rest like the team from @TwoEggTV so we decided to try our hand at finding it.

How did we do? Let’s just say that we add a few precious new sparklies to our collection and have a great new adventure to tell you about! Let’s start with this look back at the adventurer at the root of the story, the Pirate of the Three Rivers himself, William Augustus Bowles.

This is a great piece that highlights an unusual character. The concept of establishing the Nation of Muskogee in Florida is fascinating & I find myself half wishing that it succeeded. As for Bowles, I’ve always looked at him as a scam artist, to use a modern term, who was working this to his advantage. That can explain why he was "betrayed" by the Muskogees after he declared himself King of all Indians present.
