Arizona Treasure! Dump Digging and Detecting.

Arizona Treasure! Dump Digging and Detecting.

In January 2020 following our Virginia adventure we travelled to Las Vegas for the SHOT show, then on to Arizona with Tim (Ringmaster) Saylor of ‘Diggers’ fame, Carlotta Brandenburg (CB) and Gypsy Jewels (Zero Discrimination). We then spent a week travelling Arizona dump digging and metal detecting 19th Century Ghost Towns. We hope you enjoy watching our travels and a big thank you to Tim and Carlotta for their Arizona Hospitality!

Happy Fossicking! Colleen and Warren

Great video. I’ve always wanted to sift an old dump. Are there any groups in the U.S. that offer that sort of thing for a week of sifting and detecting?

I spent some time digging the Jerome and Bisbee dumps. We found all kinds of artifacts!
The interesting urban archeology that I have yet to try, but is on my list is privy digging. I know someone who has found more than a dozen gold coins, and dozens of silver coins digging old privies.
    My turn, next!

  19. Mary-Ellen Johnson on December 16, 2022 at 1:01 am

What wonderful scenery and crazy cactus lol. I have never heard of a babies details being put on a locket before, an amazing find for you Colleen. The amount of finds from you all was amazing and so great to see them all cleaned up laid out together. Whatever was in the rock shelter Warren I wouldn’t want to disturb it either, it could have been hibernating but who knows what is lurking around in the land there. Thank you for showing us all the wonderful shots of the countryside, a beautiful and wild country that is awesome. Australia seemed very large to me but the US is enormous. Take care and stay safe please my friends, good luck and happy fossicking, love and hugs to you both Mary-Ellen UK

Love digging dumps – some great finds for you! Are the locations a secret or could you help out a "dumpster diver" looking for a place in southern AZ to check out. Any info much appreciated!

  24. Alonso Cushing on December 16, 2022 at 1:06 am

I envy you cruisin’ those very scenic Arizona highways. The fleur de’lis might be off a curtain rod. That birth commemoration locket is just fantastic and i suspect, very rare. Well done.

Sorry to Debbie Downer, but why didn’t you gives the dates of the coins ??? It is important part of the video that was never answered and left the viewers hanging. Otherwise a great video.

If all those finds were yours and Colleen’s, wow, what a fantastic haul you two made! Those finds are excellent! I can’t believe how much silver coin you found, all those Rosie & Merc dimes (Roosevelts & Mercurys), Washington quarter! And it looks like you bagged a few Mexican coins, as well. I was trying to see if you had a Real (ray-AHL) in there, but without a closeup, can’t tell.
That one coin you found that was stuck to the piece of metal was too fat for a regular penny, unless it was a "fatty" Indian (1859-1864 – it had 1.5g more Cu than the redesign), standard Indian (1864-1909). As the cost of gold rose, with it went copper. and the weight was cut.
Also, you will see the wreath on the back of both Indians and Wheaties (wheaties, 1909-1958, have Lincoln on the obverse: **1943 only = zinc-plated steel).
Until 1858, the one cent coin was a "large cent" (over 1" in diameter) with a female bust sporting different hairstyles (it was reproduced for one year,1868). Lastly, the half-cent, "small cent", tiniest coin we ever made 1793-1857.
Great hunt, great finds, glad you had a successful trip to visit us in the US again! Cheers from So. Oregon!

Nice job screening. I swear by it, and manufacture them, entirely handheld, 14x22x3 1/2". 1hey have 1/4 inch stainless screen. Haven’t sold one, but have found gold, silver and glass with it, as well as tokens. tags &c. Have a good WWII era dump here, downtown Honolulu. Walking distance of my house is a good 1880s to 1910 Plantation machine shop & general dump, oldest coin yet dug, 1872 Quarter, worn out when lost c1900. I clean with a Muriatic equivalent, swimming pool cleaner. OK on brass& copper, great on silver, not so good on Nickel & alloys. Destroys Zinc & aluminum. Iron needs immediate priming.

Warren the long thin piece on the top left looks like printers cast type from a linotype machine. On the long thin edge it will have raised letters if it is.
