Buried Treasure Found! Disney Secrets & Stories – 1956 Tom Sawyer Island Map | Out of The Collection

In this episode, Jeremy shares an original map from 1956 of Tom Sawyers Island, In Disneyland California!

Professor Jeremy Patrich, (The Backyard Geographer) welcomes you to another exciting episode from Out of The Collection! He has been diligently cleaning up in his garage and is very excited to share some of the items he is rediscovering from inside his private collection. Being an eclectic collector for most of his life, you just never know what to expect.

Fun Fact: This 1956 map was the first brochure map of Tom Sawers Island that not only included the seven interactive attractions but the stories behind the theming. But did you know, that originally this was going to be Mickey Mouse Island? It was also thought to create a Treasure Island, but Walt was so inspired by the Mark-Twain that was being assembled Disney Studios for the Rivers of America… that Tom Sawyer was the final decision!

Last Fun Fact! My dad was born and raised out in Torrance in the 1950s and his neighbors were the Sundowns. They were some of the original dancers and storytellers at Disneyland. He remembers all the pow wows and backyard teepees, fires, and dances… and then seeing them working at the park!

A special thanks to Video Public Domain for the footage, and YouTube for the great music! Also thank you to my Director, Producer, and Editor Nicole VanBroekhuizen.

Don’t forget to subscribe so that you can be one of the first to see what else he’s found!

I need to see this map! 😍 I remember going to the island as a kid but didn’t realize all the changes that were made over the years. Fascinating.

As a kid going to Disneyland in the 60’s that burning cabin was one of my favorites. You could see it from the canoes, the big ship and I think the train as you went by it.

That’s cool! Didn’t go as a kid but enjoyed watching my kids run around the island when we had passes for 6 years. Good times!
