Good video! Never had any luck in CT at all (which is where I live), but have not spent much time. Did try the brook near the Cobalt mine with no luck. And a place in Thomaston mentioned by some (also nothing). I had some really good luck years ago in New Hampshire after that massive flooding we had one spring (when a lot washes out of the rocks). Over a few trips I picked up about 1/2 oz between myself and my daughter (who was young but did really well panning). Gold later went up in value and I sold it for almost $600. They use to run a gold panning trip up there at the Hobo Railroad , which is where I learned to pan (a little, I am not very good LOL).
All I saw was a pan full of garnets. Maybe if u panned off more if that’s garbage I could have see me some gold. But oh well. Prospecting still beats Pokémon go. Lol
I wouldn’t pan for gold in the Connecticut River! Nor would I swim in it! Especially if your at or below the Middletown area. Many human waste sewer treatment plants like the one in Middletown are built along side the river. It has been in the news before, that in past practice whenever a very large rain storm hits the area, the treatment plant will open the waste gates so that the waste will flow into the Connecticut River and get flushed to the ocean with the fast moving current caused by the rain storm. They only do it during rain storms and justify it by saying it saves money and the stuff get washed out to sea. It’s a long ways to the ocean and I feel bad for all the towns below Middletown! This was a few years ago that someone reported it to the public so I don’t know if the practice is still be done.
In Portland, Connecticut there is a brook that runs through the Meshomasic State Forest. It’s called "Mine Brook". Long time ago mining was done for gold there. Connecticut Governor Winthrop had a gold ring made from the gold there. Back in the 80’s a teacher brought students there rock hunting and one student found a small gold nugget near the brook. A gold vein runs near the Great Hill Mountain in the state forest there but some of the vein goes through private land. The small Mine Brook has lots of bends in the brook and who knows….maybe some nuggets may have gotten trapped in the bends. DON’T try climbing the Great Hill Mountain next to the brook though, during the summer as it is a favorite place for rattlesnakes to sun themselves on the many rocks covering the side of the mountain! Winter and early Spring may be good times to go there as there is not much chance of meeting up with an angry rattler then.
Hey Timmy Great Video. I recently bought a pan, problem is that due to the messed up laws in NY Gold and other precious metals belong to the state, so I would have to give up my findings which explains why people don’t bother panning or prospecting for gold here. Just wanted to ask as far as panning is it legal to pan in that state and can you keep your findings?
Never heard of no panning for gold on state parks/forests in Connecticut though. What harm is someone doing with a pan?
I could see the forest rangers getting mad if you start digging with a large shovel though. I do metal detecting in Connecticut state park/forests and use a small trowel and I always cover up the holes I dig, and throw away trash I find.
Connecticut is horrible on sewage. I grew up on Niles Hill Road in Waterford, there is a lift station there that CONSTANTLY pumps raw sewage in the Alewife cove. It’s illegal but the state does nothing about it.
