Delaware – Every State Has Its TREASURE… What’s Yours? #LostTreasure #AdventureTales
In October of 1836, the Boston Times reported that a daring heist had taken place, where between $60,000 to $120,000 in gold was stolen off the packet ship Susquehanna. The robbery happened near Five Fathom Bank, just off the Delaware capes, when a sleek, black-painted schooner appeared unusually close to the ship. Without warning, pirates threw grappling lines and boarded the Susquehanna, quickly making off with the gold before vanishing into the mist.
Despite efforts by eyewitnesses like James M. West and Edward Maul, who were aboard the pilot boat Mary Ann, to pursue the thieves, the schooner and its stolen loot disappeared without a trace. Legend has it that the pirates met their end in a storm, taking the treasure to a watery grave at the mouth of the Delaware River. To this day, no gold has ever been recovered, and the mystery remains one of the most intriguing pirate legends in American history.
