Exposure to wildfire smoke could increase your risk of more severe COVID symptoms

This segment originally aired on July 26, 2024.

A Treasure Valley doctor shared a warning with CBS2 about the combination of the current summer surge of coronavirus and degraded air quality caused by wildfire smoke.

“I think we’re going to see, if you’re sick from this [smoke] and you get sick from COVID, you’re going to get sicker,” said Dr. Ethan Sims, an emergency physician with St. Luke’s health system.

Simplified, Dr. Sims explained, the particles you breathe in from wildfire smoke can get into the lower airway causing lengthy inflammation and wearing out the body’s immune system.
