General Yamashita’s Gold: Hidden treasure of the Pacific War

General Tomoyuki Yamashita, the Tiger of Malaya supposedly hid war loot in caves, tunnels and underground complexes in different cities of the Philippines. American historian Sterling Seagrave wrote two books arguing more than 6000 tons of gold were looted, under orders from Emperor Hirohito using the military and Yakuza and that all those involved died during the war. It’s further alleged General Douglas MacArthur was given intelligence about this and discovered 170 tunnels and caves, secretly shipping the gold back to the US. In 1988 a Filipino treasure hunter named Rogelio Roxas sued President Ferdinand Marcos, claiming he had found an enormous amount of treasure and that Marcos had him arrested and seized it for himself. Roxas died on the eve of trial, but the Hawaii Supreme Court in 1998 stated there was sufficient evidence Roxas had found the treasure and that Marcos stole it.
