Across the south of New Jersey, there are 1.1 million acres of pine forest. From the northern part of Ocean Country down to Cape May, the Pinelands National Reserve occupied 22% of the state’s land area and is the largest body of open space on the Mid-Atlantic Seaboard between Moston and Richmond. Additionally, 45 percent of the region, or around 493,000 acres, are owned by the public. However, a part of this reserve is of particular note, sourcing several urban legends such as the Jersey devil. This is the story of the New Jersey Pine Barrens.

Love the Jersey content. Having grown up in Toms River, Batsto en Wharton were often the setting for camping and hiking with scouting. And back in the day households were allowed to do some limited woodcutting in Wharton for use as firewood. Not to mention that partying around a bonfire in the Pineys was always good on weekend nights.
Ayyyyoooooooo lemme hear dat Jersey devil story sonnnn
Been in the pine barrens a lot. Where is the monument? I’d love to see it.
In the pre-internet days it seemed like only people who grew up in the area had ever heard of the Jersey Devil, and even today it’s still not very well-known outside of New Jersey. Even people in Philadelphia or New York, literally a 5 minutes drive from NJ, have often never heard of it. Back when they named the hockey team the New Jersey Devils, most people around the country just thought it was a cool name, but people who grew up in NJ knew why that name was picked.
Apparently Deborah Leeds is my 9th great grandmother.
Yes, Jersey girl here (born in Montclair), Rutgers alumna, what’s your story?
Per the title, All the pinehawkin inbred one toothbrush families that occupy that area
“TOOK THE AMERICAN ROUTE”…..GUN SHOTS💀💀💀 yo I’m weak
I myself am a firm believer in supernatural beings. I’ve seen a ghost before, and have seem some creepy stuff at night. Some day me and my friends plan on going around and trying to find supernatural creatures for fun lol.
I to believe i was witnessed it as a kid it chased me home inbox me n ill tell my story
As a Jersey pine barren resident I’ve never heard it lol and the abandoned brick factory is amazing for paintball
My family had a counter with jersey devil in early 1970s we were coming back from Trenton and heading towards Atlantic city dad took a shortcut through the pine barrens it was a dark road no lights no car at all of sudden we saw something very big standing in the middle of the road my father when around it the last minute our mother thinks it was jersey devil, I was in the backseat i was 12 years old at time
I’ve lived in New Jersey my entire life. This is great because it makes me appreciate where I live a little bit more 🙂
So many kids used to make up stories about seeing the Jersey devil… it’s hilarious 😵💫
Also I have Magellan so I’m hype I get to watch that documentary next.
“Ohhhhhh……Do that by your own window..I don’t wanna smell your piss”
I’m from Northern NJ, subscribed.
I’ve had an experience too when I was a kid, I’ve been within about 10 feet of it , its no myth or urban legend its 100% real.
So Whats Creeper? The Pines Or Clinton Rd?

I want to hear about your jersey devil encounter!!!!!
Americans towards Jersey devil: LIGHT EM UP BOYS
That critter never heard of leg day. Walkin around on 2 bean poles. He could kick in the rain and his legs would stay dry. No shit he has wings; put full weight on those fishing-poles-for-legs and you’re doomed; doomed I tell you! DOOOOOOOMMMMED!!!!! Oh and his eyes are red because he gets his bud from me. So good he goes to Arizona for it and, coincidentally, has been seen when he gets the munchies and kinda loses his shit and feeds on goat blood, but they call him Chupacabra here. Yup. Source: I made it up.
LOOK INTO HAMMER HEADED BATS THEY LOOK MUST LIKE THE LEGEND OF THE JERSEY DEVIL
I Saw The Devil Out Last Night @ Kevin Doyle’s Youtube channel brought me here!
Out school thought it was a good idea to take a school trip to Basto Village and the Pine Barrens where they explained the Jersey Devil to us. Nice idea doing that to 4th graders.🤣 (kiddin, we were not traumatized)
Not "settlers", INVADERS.
#Decolonize
I grew up in Monmouth county, NJ. A few years ago I researched where the Jersey Devil was born and I paid it a visit. Apparently it was born at the Nothnagle Log House in Gibbstown, NJ. It’s also one of the oldest homes in the entire US, built between 1638 and 1643 by Finnish settlers. There is an eldery lady who owns the house and if you give her a call she will give you a free tour.
The only thing that scared me in New Jersey is it’s crazy rent and property prices

Hey I was there
I live in the Pine Barrens. I have since the mid-ninties. Ir is very creepy at night. But I’ve never seen anything odd. And I never walk around at night. There’s always a feeling that you need to get inside quick once the sun goes down.
my mother actually drove out to the house when she was a teenager. she went with her friend, and recalled that things felt very off. she said that the only thing that remained was some of the rubble of the house, and the chimney. the thing that the jersey devil came out of. this was the mid eighties. spooky
I’m from newark New Jersey why I never heard of this but I do know of the hockey team Jersey devils but the creature n pine barrens is new to me
I have lived near and traveled through the Pine Barrens all my life. IMO, one reason it looks "different" is the predominance of dwarf pine species of trees, whose unusually low height throws off ones sense of perspective. When we we were teenagers, at night, sometimes we would stop and turn off the car and the lights to soak up the spooky atmosphere!
Grew up in Tom’s River right outside of the Pines and man have I seen some really creepy stuff out there. Everything from random screams, deer crucified, satanic rituals/ritual spots, KKK, random people chasing our Jeeps down trails in the middle of the night, shadowy figures flying through the trees, ufo activity, you name it. Don’t go in the trails alone at night. ALWAYS go with a group with multiple vehicles. I promise, a lot of what people will say about the Pines is true. Especially at night. If you want to be creeped out for some fun, I highly recommend the trails at Mt. Misery off route 70 a little west of Lakehurst. Last time I was out there, we pulled over so my buddy could pee and I swear to god a witch came flying out of the woods chasing him while letting out this god awful shriek. We never booked it so fast and I will NEVER forget that night.
Good, brief history of the area but the special effect grainy, oldstyle footage was just distracting to the point I couldn’t finish the video.
I once found a fancy leather loafer in the Pine Barrens. Just one shoe, by itself in the snow. Weird.
I love in South NJ in pine barrens history channel did 2 documentaries about pine Ave egg harbor township incident they got police report and pics and interviewed witnesses. They have pics foot prints in the snow even cops were stumped foot prints on roof. I can attest that there is something strange and a bunch of people have seen it but not as most describe. It looks almost like greyhound K9 body but deer head and is bigger then a deer. I grew up on asbury a dead end off of pine Ave as a child but now as a adult I currently live on pine.
Dude this is so stupid… “I have a personal experience… I don’t have to tell you! Just believe me!”
Very interesting 🤔
So.. the cannonball tore a hole in the creature’s side and “it didn’t flinch” it just “rushed off into the wilderness” directly after having its lung blown out by a 9mm aherm er uh I mean a cannon, but no, it didn’t flinch.
I find it interesting how Joseph Bonaparte (Napoleon’s Brother) and Commodore Stephen Decatur shot and blew a hole through the mighty devil’s wing but gave no effect to the devil and kept flying, it was like the devil regenerated it’s wing in seconds and acted like nothing happened.
I am from Jersey and been in the pines many times even camped in them and had festivals round there. So this is cool and legit is wild place.
grew up in south Jersey and my family owned land on Wading River… spent much time near New Gretna and Lower Bank. I am certain that their was a jersey devil
I’d love to hear your Jersey Devil story. I live in NJ and through genealogy I’ve found that I’m a descendant of the Leeds family.
