Do you suffer uncontrollable urges to look in hard to get to places? Do you have Gold Fever? Check out our awesome adventure exploring an old Michigan GOLD mine on the first day of Spring 2017!

(Bonus Video) I also fell into a deep ravine, buried to my waist in snow and knee deep in water.. My buddy had to help me and by help, I mean he held the camera as I was trying to get out.. What a funny guy!! You can even watch as I pour water out of my boot!

All kidding aside, this is really the place where gold was once mined out of the ground.. The remnants of the mine are mostly gone, but there are some things remaining you’ll see in this video that we did find. We found some amazing pieces of quartz and even white quartz too scattered about the area that perked our interest. We’ll be coming back here when the snow is gone for sure!

QUESTION – SHOULD I GET A (VR) VIRTUAL REALITY CAMERA?

How would you like to partner with me and find 5lb. 10lb. nuggets? I know of a clear open area for you to metal detect. You need a deep coil rig.

  4. Geoff Brown on August 27, 2022 at 1:23 pm

    Some False teeth would help

  5. J-Man on August 27, 2022 at 1:25 pm

Gold doesn’t shine, Pyrite does. Gold runs with it.

  6. Igor Banski on August 27, 2022 at 1:26 pm

awesome! have you been back yet?

  7. Typical RockHound on August 27, 2022 at 1:27 pm

Pyrite and chalcopyrite exposed to the elements looks like that usually
. the only gold I’ve ever seen was a distinct yellow .you can’t mistaken for anything else .
Most times gold is mixed with sulphides or other minerals . Not visible by eye .
Great video ! Looks like a wicked spot ! Keep on searching .

Ropes gold mine hard rock mining

  9. Frank Kolton on August 27, 2022 at 1:31 pm

I know zilch about mining, but I do know about cedar swamps, and that mine is right on the edge of one, I would think that mine going down more than a few feet, would fill with water faster than it could be pumped out. Can any miners or engineers explain how they can mine on the edge of a swamp?

  10. Allen Roach on August 27, 2022 at 1:31 pm

That rock you were fingering definitely had gold in it. It is the kind of stuff to bust out, crush and then pan out for gold. Check out a guy named Jeff Williams on youtube. He will tell you how much gold was in that rock. By the way, I knew you or your father, brother back in 66,67 Kingsford.

  11. Shirley Balinski on August 27, 2022 at 1:31 pm

Where there is gold, is silver.

  12. Igor Banski on August 27, 2022 at 1:32 pm

Between 1900-1901, $200k worth of gold was mined there. And consider how low the price of gold was then. Lots of gold!

  17. Chris Rockwell on August 27, 2022 at 1:41 pm

I never thought of watching these in VR. That’s a pretty neat idea, I think for all the adventurers that watch would really be able to add a lot to the overall experience if we were to watch in VR. might even be able to give helpful advice if people see something or know something that you don’t. Id imagine the prices are steep for a VR camera, good luck to you

  18. Joe Schmo on August 27, 2022 at 1:42 pm

    probably ropes mine

  19. Alex Nutu on August 27, 2022 at 1:42 pm

That’s Chalcopyrite if you haven’t figured that out by now… it’s copper bearing pyrite gives it more of a yellow/orange color can be iridescent too but unfortunately not gold.

  29. Arthur Hunt on August 27, 2022 at 1:50 pm

What you picked up is pyrite. Gold is found with pyrite, quartz, magnetite, pitchblende,..but what you picked up is pyrite. When you come back in better weather and before the gnats and mosquitos, look for other minerals. When these mines were in operation years ago, they were not looking for crystals of any kind as they were looking for gold to survive. Also, occasionally the miners did pick up some neat minerals. If you can look at a stereo photos of the area you are in, you can see where houses were, dumps, outhouse, and mine property. All are great to look at but make sure you can pick around. I’ve only been in the U.P. one time and only a few days. I found a bunch of antique bottles of different kinds. The majority of the bottles were from a pop and said Neguanee on the bottom. I made $300.00 of of them before I even got out of the U.P. I have not been able to go back to that area because my health and financial situation. Perhaps this spring or fall I can make it up again. Instead of spending an hour picking bottles, I will come with a small enclosed trailer, a bail of straw, and 40lbs of newspapers. Have fun, but always be careful you don’t slip into an old mine shaft or get in trouble for trespassing.

  34. Troy Stutsman on August 27, 2022 at 1:55 pm

You need to come back with a gold bug 2 and go over the entire area…!

  35. B Laquisha on August 27, 2022 at 1:57 pm

At Ropes the gold was so fine you couldn’t see it in the rock. There was lots of pyrite too.

    Not saying this was Ropes.

  36. Adam Blumer on August 27, 2022 at 1:58 pm

  42. Luke Parks on August 27, 2022 at 2:09 pm

    Anyone know where this is

  43. Jeffro Bodine on August 27, 2022 at 2:09 pm

Why in hell don’t you have a metal detector??😥

  44. smiley492 on August 27, 2022 at 2:10 pm

Just a heads up. As with all mines in the upper peninsula you need to be careful where you step and what your surroundings are. There are still old mi es which were shafts capped with wood that is now rotten. Back forever ago a family lost their child picking blue berries because she slid under the edge of the concete cap. Springtime and no snow is best before the foliage comes in. Remember many see this and th I k it’s ok to do this!

The Ropes Gold Mine near Deer Lake

  46. greg jones on August 27, 2022 at 2:12 pm

Careful last time I was there i came across numerous wolf tracks the size of my fist. This is Michigan’s most recognized former mine. It is common knowledge you can rock hound on this property treat it accordingly.

  47. Christopher Mattas on August 27, 2022 at 2:14 pm

I live in Da YOOP an I have been pretty interested in gold prospecting. I have a bunch of equipment that I have accumulated over the years just for fun. Would you be willing to divulge this location in a private conversation? Thanks for the awesome video!

  48. Priscilla Ross-Fox on August 27, 2022 at 2:15 pm

If you are in Marquette Co. better be careful you aren’t on Ropes property.

  49. Carl Fitzpatrick on August 27, 2022 at 2:16 pm

Looks like a area between the ropes and Michigan mines which where closed during WW2 by the government because the focus was on iron and copper at the end of the war the owners of the Michigan couldn’t get the investment to pump out the mine and reopen it where the ropes did. At the time of the closing the Michigan mine was out performed the ropes 3-1 and if you look at satellite mapping the two mines are only a mile or two apart. There is even gold in very minimal amount s mixed in with the iron Hematite mines in iron and Dickinson county’s which was not processed out it was when sent to the steel mills in Pennsylvania and just think of the amount that could have been recovered today with the hundreds of millions of tons in that area in just iron county around 380 million tons of iron ore was sent to the mills just during WW2. Marquette has a number of gold mines and areas that people are still finding gold in rivers and streams. The copper areas of the Upper Peninsula have a lot of gold and silver mixed in with the copper and the silver in the copper is what make U.P. Copper so different from any copper in the world. There where two short lived gold mines in Dickinson county one in Kingsford near the metal recycling place.
