When I was a kid I got a summer job at Yosemite. I met an old gold miner in El Portal, just outside the park and he got me started in gold prospecting. In talking to him, whenever he’d talk about an old lost mine story that he didn’t believe in he’d say "It’s all Breyfogle." lol

Very interesting but the writer of this program has a lot of facts wrong. First is that the Breyfogle Mine has already been found long before this episode was ever thought of. Second the name of this individual is not Jacob but John who was a blacksmith from the town of Austin, Nevada, who was also a prospector from time to time.

Third John Breyfogle left Austin Nevada to explore for gold and made a discovery. He returned to Austin Nevada in the spring of 1864. On another mining trip to his site during the summer of 1864, he and his 2 partners awoke to find their horses missing at their camp which was nestled next to a little spring nearby the mine site. The horses wondered off and the trio went looking for them. For two days trio ended up lost, hungry and thirsty. They were surprised by a band of Shoshone Indians. His partners were murdered and he escaped to Jackson mountain between goldfield and Lime Point, Nevada,(which was known as Hornsilver during the late 1900’s thru the late 1920’s and is known today as Gold Point, Nevada).

Soon he made his journey back to Austin but barley surviving both in health wise and mentality and the people of Austin had thought he had been scalped. The sun blistered every surface of his body including his bald head. Part of the reason they believe he survived the Indian attack was that he was acting mentally deranged and the Shoshone Indians were scared of those types of individuals during that time.

Once he was able to recover enough he told his story and marked where they can find his gold mine 50 miles southwest of Goldfield in the Gold Mountain Range of Nevada, not in Death Valley, Ca. The citizens of Austin along with John Breyfogle failed to locate the mine site.

A professor from the university of Nevada and the Nevada Historical Society had located artifacts in a tunnel at the Royal Flush property in the Gold Mountain Range, Nevada. The artifacts dates back to the time of Breyfogle and are believed to be used by Breyfogle and his partners. No other mining activity in the area dated back to the 1860’s. The tools that’s were found were not from the current mine owners and appeared to be made during the mid 1860’s as one of the tools were used to pack black powder into the bore holes. Dynamite was the current means at this mine when the tools were discovered. The time of the discovery of the artifacts which historians believed to be used by Breyfogle and his partners were made during fall of 1908. The Tonopah Daily Bonanza newspaper reported this story on November 17, 1908.

IDK if this helps anyone. I just happened to be searching for historic newspapers for the town of Lime Point, Nevada when I came across this story and remembered that I watched this video in the past and wanted to see if it matched up.
