Jacob Scudder gravesite – Guardian of the Secret Cherokee Tunnel of Gold
A hunt for the lost Diana’s Chapel Cemetery near Hightower, GA and finding the grave monument of Jacob Scudder, caretaker of a legendary secret Cherokee tunnel of gold built before the Indian Removal in 1839. He and his wife’s crypts were ransacked and destroyed by treasure hunters seeking Indian symbol carvings supposedly leading to the secret tunnel. As a wealthy plantation owner, businessman, and gold mine owner, it was said Scudder was worth $300,000 in gold alone by 1845. After the Civil War started in 1861 he donated almost $100,000 to the Southern Confederacy. They called him the “Rich Man” of North Georgia. He was born July 13, 1788 and died March 7, 1870. To find out more about Scudder and lost treasure stories of the Cherokee, read CRY OF THE EAGLE by Forest C. Wade.
