Lost towns of Lake Murray: How a town was flooded in South Carolina

Lost towns lie beneath the waters of Lake Murray in South Carolina.
But one time, that area was known as the Saluda River Valley. It was settled in the 1750’s by German, Swiss, and Dutch immigrants, with two major towns: Dutch Fork and Saxe Gotha.
But those towns are no more, they were buried in water after SCE&G bought the land, creating the lake. The towns were both flooded, all but erased from history. All that remains now are remnants of a past that few people alive know little about.

This story is an absolute lie. They submerge the towns of Black people and we were never compensated for any of the lands are home lost. The arrogance in an age where you can find information about nearly anything and it still put out such a board crap story is the shameful and disgusting. As a black man I am disgusted how white America has absolutely the side of the turn his head and wheel for ignorance and evil that came before them. By continuing to reporting like this and hiding history is the exact reason why there is a need for reparations. If you actually look at everything on a scale this is even worse than what Germany did it happen far longer and is still taking place

  8. Mike Da Access King on May 20, 2023 at 7:15 am

Of course they left a lot out. There were many in the black towns that refused to leave because it was their home, so they were flooded alive. And yes they were black families but of course they leave that tidbit of history out

Many indigenous were classified as slaves during that era and have been reclassified and renamed several times over history. We know who we are.

This was an Indian town. “Negro” “Colored” and “Black” were colonization classifications of American Indians. It’s time we remember who we are. Understand that this is your land and you have been lied to. Peace.

  37. Timmy on May 20, 2023 at 7:46 am

Another Aboriginal genocide being covered up…just like Tulsa

  38. Nelly Belly on May 20, 2023 at 7:46 am

A lot of these were black towns they buried underwater. And don’t believe it when he tells you they paid for the residents of these towns to relocate. That’s a lie.

  46. Battle Axe on May 20, 2023 at 7:57 am

That’s a damn shame. Therefore, shame on the State of South Carolina for allowing the flooding of the Congaree Indians’ ancestral land to take place to begin with!

  47. Michael Kay on May 20, 2023 at 8:01 am

The Deep House is a good horror movie about a haunted house under a lake. I’m sure lake mead has some pretty spooky stories!👻🏠👻

  48. kenney0313 on May 20, 2023 at 8:02 am

    Wow. Really?

We now have over 91,000 dams creating lakefront real estate property. Where the Indians at? Oh, that’s right! They labeled us NEGRO, BLACK, and AFRICAN AMERICAN, as they burned or flooded our towns, villages, and valley cities. They then flooded North America with Magyar & Afrikaners, now called "WHITE".😂😂😂
The Afrikaners were BLACK as recently as the early 1900’s.
