A man by the name of Appleyard went to California in the gold rush era.

When he struck it rich, he came back east he used part of his gold to buy a farm near Grayville Illinois. He buried the rest of his gold on the farm.

He died before he could tell anyone where the gold was buried.

When he hauled the hidden buried treasure up out of the ground, it was worth a small fortune.
