Nate had always been a strong and determined person, and once he set he mind on something, he usually made it happen. He was wanting to search for buried gold and treasure in Oklahoma, with his new Minelab metal detector in his hands. He headed for the Black Dog Trail crossing on the Arkansas river, and was going to search for any gold that was left by migrating California miners long ago.
He arrived at Newkirk in Kay county with his minivan and metal detector. He was a no-nonsense man who got things done. He checked into a hotel where he would be staying while he worked. The weather was warm and sunny, with a slight breeze. The river was somewhat calm which was perfect for gold hunting. Gold prospectors have been finding gold in Oklahoma rivers and he had some time off from work and he would find the gold or else.
He started on the bank of the river, digging up the bottom of the river and sloshing it around in his pan. Nate knew that most likely he would find mostly small pieces in his pan. He worked a small pool off the side of the main part of the river. At first, Nate found nothing but junk. As he came towards a muddy area, his metal detector suddenly started going off. As he dug up the bottom, Nate saw that there were small flecks of gold in his pan. He would have to work very carefully to separate them from the mud and gravel in his pan.
This was not going to cut it. He wanted more than a few flecks in the pan. He imagined where the miners were at the crossing and tried to reason where they might have dropped or buried the gold. For a while he did not find anything else, but a strike suddenly grabbed his attention. It was right at the edge of the water but it did not look like gold. He dug into the bank and there were a few coins, apparently dropped by people fishing. They were modern coins and only worth their face value.
He persisted though because the metal detector was continuing to go off. . He found a silver dime that had been buried there and this one was definitely not a modern coin. It said “1830” on it as near as he could tell. Then came a silver dollar from the same era! Even if Nate found little in the way of gold he had found something and spurred him on. After finishing in this area Nate walked back to his vehicle, crossing through an area where people had apparently be having picnics because there were small scraps of food around the area and a plastic fork. Maybe Nate would get lucky so he worked along through the area. Someone did drop a little pocket change and nearby the coins Nate found a couple of dollars. He kept the metal detector on and was a few hundred feet from his car when Nate passed by an old hollowed out tree. The metal detector went off near the tree and Nate, already hungry and wanting lunch, marked the tree with a ribbon. He knew that something was buried in the ground there, though of course he did not know whether it was valuable or not.
After eating lunch, Nate went back to the tree and moved the metal detector, finding the strike on the south side of the tree. He used a metal detector pinpointer to get a better idea of where it was. He began to dig rather frantically as it looked like this was going to be a big hit. Suddenly he had a stinging sensation on his ankle and looked down to see a scorpion which struck his ankle several times. Nate angrily kicked the arachnid away. He had been stung by these before and knew there might be some swelling but at least this wasn’t the poisonous kind. He hoped he could find the tree again, locking its position into GPS before going to a local store for some Epsom salt to soak his feet in. While he soaked, Nate looked at maps of the area and studied the terrain. The area on his ankle swelled and he did not know if he would be able to go out the next day or not. He also used a laptop computer to get an idea of the best areas along the river for both panning and looking for miner’s gold from the crossing of California gold miners migrating east.

This story seems to have very little truth to it.
Nice article!
I live just a few miles from Newkirk and would enjoy detecting that area. Problem is you can’t park on the bridge and wondered where Nate parked his mini van?
