Pay Dirt! Big Thunder Gold Mine! Panning for Gold in the Black Hills of South Dakota!

Come along and mine with us!! We spent the day with a panning expert from Big Thunder Gold Mine, for an afternoon digging for real Black Hills Gold and learning to pan for gold in the same gold-rich streams that brought early miners to the Black Hills in the 1800’s. Anything we find we get to keep! The kids, primarily my husband John, were so excited for our claim panning adventure.

In the United States, Claims grant the discoverer of Valuable minerals that might be found in loose material like sand or gravel the right to mine and keep the minerals. Typically, in the United States, the valuable mineral in a claim is almost always gold.

We met Trenton, our claim tour guide at Big Thunder Gold Mine, first thing in the morning. We then followed him in our RV four miles down the road to the National Forest Service Claim. We changed into our muck boots, grabbed our gear and hiked about a half mile into the National Forest.

Once we arrived at the site Trenton gave us some direction and went over safely procedures. Then the hunting began.

This was a wonderful experience for us but gold prospecting is physical activity. I highly recommend doing this but this particular tour requires a half mile hike through the National Forest where there are no amenities and you are completely surrounded by nature. We packed and brought with us snacks, bottled water, extra dry socks, determination to find gold, positive attitudes and willingness for preform some good ol’hard-work.

Why are you wearing face masks with your family in the outdoors? Do you sleep with them on to at home or in your confined camper?

I’m in the sierra nevada mountains in california. and actually found nuggets in my creek way at the back of the property. Ive got about 4 grams but had to stop panning because of all the poison oak sticks mixed into the dirt.
