Our journey begins in the late 1800s, when the American Southwest was still a wild and untamed frontier. Charlie Brooks and his crew traversed these harsh landscapes, hauling goods between Chihuahua, Mexico, and Los Angeles, California. Little did they know that the very rocks they used to keep their mules in line were actually valuable nuggets of gold – possibly from the legendary Peg Leg Smith gold mine.

These weren’t your typical gold nuggets, though. They were peculiar, heavy, black rocks about the size of walnuts, coated in desert varnish. For years, Charlie and his swampers unknowingly threw away fortunes, using these gold-laden stones to prod their lagging mules.

As our story unfolds, we’ll explore how Charlie’s accidental find intertwines with the legend of Peg Leg Smith, a colorful character from the early days of the American West. Smith claimed to have found a rich deposit of black gold nuggets in the desert, a discovery that has since become one of the most famous lost mines in California lore.

Through Maggie’s journey, we’ll uncover fascinating details about the old freight routes, the challenges faced by frontier travelers, and the ever-changing landscape of the Southwest. Her theories about the possible location of the Pegleg gold will take us on a thrilling exploration of the Chocolate Mountains, the areas around Yuma, and even south of the International Boundary.

This episode is more than just a tale of lost treasure – it’s a window into the rich history and legends of the American Southwest. We’ll discuss the early days of freight transportation, the significance of water sources in the desert, and the superstitions surrounding gold among Native American tribes.

There’s a Pegleg Smith monument just east of Borrego Springs, California and next to it there’s a giant pile of rocks that have been put there one by one by visitors, it’s really neat.
