Many tales of buried pirate treasure circulate throughout Florida, and Mayport has one of its own.
According to Judge Gavagan, a schooner with four masts once anchored off Seminole Beach. Two men lowered a boat and rowed it into a nearby inlet, close to where the lighthouse now stands. They disappeared up the creek for a few hours. When the boat returned, only one man was aboard. It is believed the two men buried treasure, and one killed the other to be the sole keeper of its location.
Over the years, treasure hunters have searched the area around the creek and lighthouse, but no treasure has been found. Yet, locals still believe that pirate gold is hidden somewhere along the creek, waiting to be discovered.
