I read somewhere years ago that many of the Hessians stayed here in this country after the war and married becoming Americans. I always wondered how true that is.. All my family who fought in the Civil War were rebels, and they took up arms against the United States. The good ole USA has been very forgiving.

yes they were wrong. truth is objective. taxation is theft because it is not voluntary.

At the time of the American Revolution, England was not a democracy. It was ruled by a king and aristocracy. Since the colonists were fighting to establish a democratic republic, I would say the loyalists were wrong. Even England is a democracy today. As Churchill reportedly said, democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others.

It all Started when the Doan Family Farm was Seized for being Pacifists and refusing to be involved. THAT lit the Fire and Created the Outlaws.

"Mahlon" is pronounced "May-lun". Great vid as usual…Thanks for your time and effort.

How ironic. I was at a seminar last week on the Doan gang. It was hosted by Washington Crossing Park. Two speakers representing Mercer Museum of Doylestown, Bucks County. They will be opening a display in spring 2024 covering the history of the Doans. Looking forward to the rest of your series.

Yeah, they were wrong. Tory scum. I’m sure they would be delighted at the government over reach nowadays.

  14. Debbie Hills on May 20, 2023 at 7:26 am

Some historic events may not be the most popular or desired, but not telling them would definitely stand as far worse for no one to learn.

  16. Samantha B on May 20, 2023 at 7:29 am

    Where was their family farm?

  17. THG Driver on May 20, 2023 at 7:32 am

Great history lesson Cliff, the winners always get to write the history. If you pick the losing side………Well (I think) the saying goes…………"one countries patriot is another countries outlaw/terrorist". The colonies won against the British so……………..

  18. Bunny Smith on May 20, 2023 at 7:32 am

Love your point about them fighting for a cause. I would encourage you to continue in this vein if you feel compelled. People who love history can understand nuance.

  19. PaHeadhunter on May 20, 2023 at 7:33 am

My 9x and 8x great grandparents farms were in Plumstead at that time. They were German Lutherans not Quakers though. I’ve often wondered if they knew or had run ins with the Doan gang.

I have talked to Canadians about the revolutionary war and they have a different view of it they did repel an invasion of the Americans and very proud of it maybe too proud lol but very good people to know

  24. kickn it on May 20, 2023 at 7:45 am

The doan cave is very small in ralph Stover Park. Maybe 6 feet deep. 3 feet high.

  26. Sheila Edquist on May 20, 2023 at 7:49 am

Amazing share!! Thankyou. I wonder where in Canada the one Doan fellow settled…

  27. Stephen Hornak on May 20, 2023 at 7:49 am

Well the only thing that I have to say about this is their ancestors at some point came to this country from some other country I don’t know if they came from England or not but then they want to be loyal to England?

  28. Redgonetogray on May 20, 2023 at 7:50 am

I’m sure they’re loyalty was behind the money the British provided. Look what money is doing to government today… don’t forget, you said it yourself. They were thieves.

  29. Mister M on May 20, 2023 at 7:51 am

I was always under the impression Mahlon was pronounced "mail on" Anyone know for sure?

  30. J Wright on May 20, 2023 at 7:53 am

Looks like they were not buried facing east, per the Quaker tradition. I wonder if that was done on purpose.

  31. Pamela Attrux on May 20, 2023 at 7:55 am

It is generally believed that a full third of American colonists stayed loyal to Britain during the Revolution with one third wanting independence and the final third not taking a side. This is the first Quaker criminal gang I’ve heard of and I wasn’t expecting to ever find one. Live and learn.

  35. South paw on May 20, 2023 at 7:58 am

@9:00. Great conversation to have. Good thoughts to keep in mind.

  36. The Nature of Things on May 20, 2023 at 7:59 am

Interesting video. If you think about it, the American Colonies were actually British Colonies. So, from the British point of view, everyone who was fighting against the British were outlaws who were fighting against their own country at the time.

  37. Mary Long on May 20, 2023 at 8:01 am
