The Lost Rolling Stock of New Hampshire | Hiding in Winnipesaukee Lake | History in the Dark

An accident took place along Winnipesaukee lake in September of 1900 killing two men. Multiple pieces of rolling stock were damaged beyond repair in the wreck, and a few it seems, remain on the bottom of the lake to this very day.

    It’s actually 212 feet deep

    B&M 3666 is awfully nearby…

You should do the train reck about the New Haven railroad in Massachusetts around the Williamsburg Haydenville in Northampton Massachusetts area. There was a train wreck in 1905 I believe.

These cars are already on display…just get scuba certified.

I love lake Winnipesaukee and have been there many times but not once have I heard of boxcars being down there!

  6. @whitemountainproductions on December 28, 2023 at 8:31 am

Awesome I’ve heard about this before but never new it was true I guess there’s no locomotive but there is at least a boxcar

  7. @FreakinBOOM on December 28, 2023 at 8:31 am

Pretty cool. I’ve lived in New Hampshire my whole life been to Winnipesaukee a few times and been obsessed with trains since birth. If you’re interested in a railroad that beats the odds and get four new leases on life, check out the Bridgton and Saco river railroad. You wont be disappointed.

Wooo glad to be back as an underwater train finder!

  9. @davidsellars646 on December 28, 2023 at 8:38 am

Appears to be wood (under) frame which would be appropriate for the period.

You are, in fact, pronouncing it correctly.
    Thank you.

Wonderful….finally talking about something I can associate with….No wait…BOXCAR,BOXCAR…not poxscar.

  13. @Losaru on December 28, 2023 at 8:44 am

Where I’m from in Newfoundland, the boxcars have been used by towns for storage and even one converted to a bathroom for a town park. Sadly, Newfoundland’s railway died in 1989

I for one am surprised you haven’t made a video about Wasatch Railroad Contractors, yet. If you look up info about it, you’d be surprised at how horribly mismanaged it was. It’s owner was even charged by the Federal Government, in fact.

Have you done a video on the 1879 Tay Bridge Disaster? That engine was raised from underwater & returned to service with the nickname "Diver"!

  16. @ryandavis7593 on December 28, 2023 at 8:49 am

If Colorado isn’t on your list there is a sometimes sunken boxcar. It is in John Martin reservoir on the south side of the tracks and west of the bridge that traverses bay of the lake. It is an outside steel framed wooden car from about the 1930s. The wood is almost completely gone. I don’t know the whole story on how it got there except it obviously came down the steep embankment. It can be seen on Google maps and Google earth. The last Google image showed it to be about forty feet from the waterline but with the amount of runoff this year it is likely under water.

Also as a man born and raised in New Hampshire, you nailed that pronunciation.

If you want to do boxcars… look up boxcar canyon in oregon! Its awesome ( :

  21. @Robert-S-World on December 28, 2023 at 9:04 am

There is rumors of one of the finger lakes in New York have some rolling stock in it

  22. @slagarcrue85 on December 28, 2023 at 9:09 am

I don’t even think the box car children would think do this salvage lol!

  23. @greenthomasproductions on December 28, 2023 at 9:09 am

    Non members gang here

  24. @JohnDavies-cn3ro on December 28, 2023 at 9:11 am

I believe that if a freight car was too badly damaged for economic repairs, the old policy was to drag it clear of the tracks and burn it, then salvage any metal parts – the whole priority back then was to get the line cleared and running asap. Interestingly, your films doesn’t appear to show any trucks or brake gear. Could that have been stripped, before rolling it? In Britain, where old vehicles were sold off cheaply, you can still find crumbling goods vans and carriages tucked away in farmer’s fields – even to the extent of complete trains (minus engine). Seriously they have yielded a very rich harvest for various preservation societies.

  25. @terranengineer8877 on December 28, 2023 at 9:12 am

Have you considered Sherkston Quarry in Ontario. It’s a quarry turned water park that still has a locomotive or two as well as the track network and other structures still down there
