TREASURE: Buried Treasure of Moishe Edelman
TREASURE: Buried Treasure of Moishe Edelman
In 1933 Moishe Edelman, an itinerant peddler from Russia, is reported to have related a tale of buried treasure to a physician in Cleveland. Edelman, who had spent the previous 17 years criss-crossing the Appalachians…peddling household goods and wares to remote residents. On his death bead, Edelman reportedly told a Cleveland physician that he had amassed a sizable during his years on the road and had buried his wealth in a remote section of Lincoln County, West Virginia.
Known in popular culture as “The Peddler’s Lost Cache”, the story of Moishe Edelman and his alleged buried fortune is an intriguing mix of history, folklore and legend. A backwoods merchant who is miserly in his ways, lives a solitary existence and strongly distrusts banks. In end, he can’t take his earthly wealth with him…so he leaves it behind…with just enough clues to tease and tantalize the imagination. Does the buried treasure of Moishe Edelman really exist? Only you can be the judge.

I wouldn’t search for this because I feel like the folks are looking through their windows with a shotgun to see someone come out with loot lol
#1 story channel online. I like That Chapter and Mr. Ballen but you win in my books.
I don’t even have any connection to WV, and I am an avid watcher of these stories. The narration and presentation quality are top-notch, and the info and visuals are delivered so efficiently, without sacrificing depth of interesting details. Keep up the excellent work, it is much appreciated!
I know of a woman that had 100s of thousands cash hidden in the walls of her old home,,when she died it was found that mice made bedding out of her fortune,
Harts creek
“You can’t take it with you..”
That’s where booby-traps come in handy. Just cuz I’m dead doesn’t mean you can rifle through my sh*t…
Maybe it is a Rock that looks like a Face
Dang I’m from Lincoln county
Dangerous snakes? Lol from Australia
It’s all about the SUSPENDED ANIMATION BABY!!!
Have Fun with your Hunt 😉😁☺️
We have that here 😃
The reason is simple I don’t want to go somewhere that every tom dick and harry will or have been. No offense and I wouldn’t mind if a few had it’s just that I don’t do well in crowded area’s when sleuthing. On that note I will say that it does seem to be a peaceful trip otherwise.
Ashokan Farewell in the background AND the Ken Burns of WV???
A Russian Jewish immigrant! I am soooooo loving this story!
Amazing documentary. Thank you! 😊
Great Video as always…please keep them coming. We all enjoy them very much. All your hard work is greatly appreciated.
We had our own here in NM and still do.
Listening again March 2022. You are very enjoyable.
A $1500 detector will find it, if it exists. Leather spats, bug spray, CCW, and ready to go. Will share with landowner.
Got my shovel and metal detector!!! I’m off to find GOLD 😷👍HAHA wouldn’t that be awesome to stumble on the treasure of 1933 peddler
Dr made up a story for attention. Ugh – urban legends should be left to die.
I took an Amtrak train thru this region in 1994..We went by the New River Gorge Bridge….many water mills still turning…..A local historian gave a talk during this trip…..
One Question to MWV is this if only 2k have viewed this and out of that how many people do you think have gone on to search?
“Hard Road” is still a common phrase in the rural parts of WV. I didn’t realize that it was even a saying at all, but I’m from the southern coalfields.
My ex’s family is buried on fry cemetery in that area I know that area pretty good I’m in wv know about 30 mins away from fry cemetery
Where it forks off into another body of water.
I absolutely love your channel! And I love how you narrate, reminds me of Charles Kuralt when I used to watch him!
This is just an anti-semitic trope.
Its all about the SUSPENDED ANIMATION!!!
I am 50 years old. Both of my grandfathers "hoarded" their cash. My father’s father put his in coffee tins and hid them in the rafters of his garage. My mother’s father wore a money belt all of the time, and often locked himself in a room to count his hard-earned treasure. Both men were hard-working and left their wives over a million dollars in cash and other assets. We all lived a humble middle-class existence. We could all learn a lesson from those who went before us.
Buried near water does not make sense? The large rock probably would not be moved. And near the bank sounds like another clue not a location
Me and a buddy went looking for this treasure in 1989. Didn’t find it. The creek was up and an ice storm hit the night before.
Well if you were a transient back then the question is who would have taken notice of you back then anyway.
The doctor couldn’t believe how remote and isolated Lincoln County was back than, well it’s sorta still that way today.
Back then alot of people did not believe in banks. They buried their money. Maybe he buried near a Delta.
If I lived there I would buy a good metal detector….
If you did put your money in gold and buried it and it was a bit heavy then you wouldn’t travel far from it that means he spent time in the area. His gold would have been confiscated if found. This means someone around there knew him.
Strongly distrusting banks: not a bad idea.
This area was my dad + uncle’s stomping grounds.
The area looks beautiful! I absolutely love your narration and production second to none. It’s absolutely incredible. Thank you
theres a big diff between a mile or two..maybe it was said a mile or so?..but 2?..if you really wanted someone to find it theres a big diff in a mile or 2..and arent there cities to buy your goods back then closer than cleveland?
We too often take for granted the hard work behind the infrastructures built buy our ancestors. They lived tough lives with nowhere near the level of comfort that we enjoy today. We owe them a lot. God bless every single one of those women and men.
This is still a very good story. One of my favorites is the D.B. Cooper story. Some reports say that treasure was found, or at least pieces of it were. This will be found some day.
I like this lost treasure feature. It adds an interesting variation from the predominate criminal investigation stories; but it is presented with the same attention to detail and professionalism that I like about this channel. Sean, you did an excellent job with this presentation!
Well done thank you
Ummmm honey i’ll be back in a week i have something i have to check on.
What my husband and do is use is Historical Maps of the time
