Treasure of the Midwest: Indiana Thoroughbred Horse Racing
Treasure of the Midwest: Indiana Thoroughbred Horse Racing
Horse racing has been an important part of life in Indiana since it was granted statehood in 1816.
Hoosiers are known for their love of sports and speed, so it’s no surprise that they fell head-over-heels for the thrill of Thoroughbred horse racing.
Still, it wasn’t until the legalization of pari-mutuel betting in 1993 that Indiana could really shine as a horse racing state. In less than 30 years, Indiana has developed an outstanding program for Thoroughbred breeders and owners.
Local horsemen take their finest Thoroughbreds to Indiana Grand Racing & Casino to compete for incredible purses that are topped by competitive breeders and owners awards. This track is constantly praised for its clean facilities and the wonderful people that work within them.
Indiana works diligently to support the people and horses that make up this industry.
The state chapter of the HBPA not only represents the horsemen but also provides health care and educational services. The track is constantly building new facilities and improving upon their current ones to make life at the track safer and more comfortable. The Indiana Thoroughbred Alliance works to educate newcomers in the industry and raise money for causes like Friends of Ferdinand.
Every organization in Indiana strives to ensure that all horses and humans are listened to and cared for.
Those who work with horses know the impact of racing extends far beyond the track in Shelbyville.
The horse industry supports all kinds of business in Indiana – there is someone employed by or offering services to horse racing in each one of Indiana’s 92 counties. The state’s horse racing industry employs thousands of people and has a $1 billion economic impact.
Indiana is quickly becoming the premier state to breed and raise racehorses in the Midwest. The state has a plethora of farms for horsemen to choose from, affordable stallions that can fit any mare’s needs, excellent veterinary care, and plenty of people who want to help newcomers flourish.
There’s no better time to get involved in Indiana horse racing than now.
