Gold was first discovered in Maryland in 1861 by a Civil War soldier, Private McCleary of the 71st
Regiment. He was stationed in the Great Falls area which is outside of Washington, DC. Rumor has it that he was washing his skillets in a creek and noticed something shiny. Turns out it was gold. He kept it a secret and after the war he come back and filed a claim.

Near the turn of the century there were over 45 gold mines in operation in Maryland, all of which are now closed. If you look in the streams and creeks near these abandoned mines you’re likely to find some gold.
