What a catch! Florida family finds $300,000 worth of sunken treasure

A treasure hunting family has found an estimated $300,000 worth of gold from an historic wreckage off the Florida coast.

Rick Schmitt, his wife and two grown children who spend their time together looking for lost treasure, found gold chains and coins from the wreckage of a convoy of 11 ships in the Atlantic Ocean.

Son Eric Schmitt described the feeling of finding the buried treasure.

“You know, the first was excitement, followed by a lot of almost, you know, crying.” Report by Sarah Kerr.

One day I was taking a walk along that dock and actually met these folks… Didn’t know they were doing this good when they told me they were "treasure hunters!" Congrats guys

That’s why I said "private collector"

    Nobody would find out.

  3. BVargas78 on September 11, 2023 at 9:22 pm

Company that owns the wreckage rights? Example of capitalism gone bad. It should just be fair game. Particularly to the citizens of the country that owns that sea territory.

Jeez, company that owns the wreckage rights? Whose dick did their grandfather have to suck to get that? I hate to think.

Sure. Sure. Stealing money from the state. Good idea.
Everything might come out well. But if they find out…oh boy. Your life is fucked.

  9. godsadog on September 11, 2023 at 9:32 pm

You will have to contact him somehow. You will have to deliver the goods somehow. Some people will know. You will have to make sure they don’t talk. Nothing may go wrong.
    It’s NOT that easy.

It should belong to the discoverers. Because the USA and the ‘state of florida’ didn’t even exist back then. And the modern incarnation of Spain didn’t exist back in 1715. Modern Spain and it’s laws and constitution date back to 1975.

I can’t understand how someone can claim the salvage rights to every coin taken from the waters around florida. Were talking about ships that went down over 200 years ago. There were hundreds of ship wrecks back then. Someone need to Challenge there claims in court.

  22. Greenpoloboy3 on September 11, 2023 at 10:06 pm

There is so much treasure the sea still hasn’t given up

  23. Gabby Eliza on September 11, 2023 at 10:06 pm

Idk for sure but I agree finders keepers but because all of the easily obtainable means to find things like metal detectors and what not . I heard atleast in Florida anyways that you have to have a license to hunt treasure in the water. It’s just some bullshit they make up to take what’s yours. I ain’t saying shit when I find anything I know that

  24. TheRedeyeJedi on September 11, 2023 at 10:11 pm

I wouldn’t of told a single person about this. I’d have just sold it straight to a private collector and got much more than the 300k scrap value.

  25. cwuzii on September 11, 2023 at 10:11 pm

Lucky bastards. They should’ve kept it to themselves and kept it all, now a lot will get taken in museums. Gutted.

  26. Wayne Rosser on September 11, 2023 at 10:17 pm

    Where in florida?
