I Went about 12 feet underwater in a quarry near where I live with only goggles on. Seen a lot of bass but my ears got plugged as I went deeper. Yes the water got cooler but I managed to slow my breathing down
Quarries are some of the most dangerous things you can jump into, to go swimming. Because folks throw any and, everything into them. CAR’S / SUV’s / TIRES ETC ETC. Also, in all rock quarries, and I do mean all rock quarries, once you reach a certain depth, the water turns cold so fast. They go from being warm because of summer days, but, even in summer once the diver reaches about 50 feet and below that, it drops down instantly from being in the 70s / 80s to the high 30’s.

The granite cylender is a from a core drill. It’s what is used to see what type of mineral layers. I m not real good at explaining…

Quarries, especially the blue water filled quarries, are filled with ground water. The blue water is caused by a lower PH, which prevents bacterial and algal growth, thus leaving the water a pristine color. Most likely, the different layers you saw, while free diving, were a meeting between the cold, pure ground water and the warmer rain water, which stays at the surface.
They average temperature at depth is 35-40⁰ F and they do not warm up in the summer. The deeper water remains a constant temperature all year long.
Quarries are so dangerous because, when you hit that cold water, especially when cliff jumping, your body’s uncontrollable response is to gasp for air, causing you to suck in a lungful of water. Also, because your body is trying to keep you alive, it cuts off all unnecessary functions. Your body’s only goal, at this time, is preserving your core temperature. This causes blood supply to be shunted off from your arms and legs, causing severe muscle cramping. It also causes breathing to slow so it becomes extremely difficult to draw breath and pull in enough oxygen to stay alert. Many people will completely pass out, when hitting the water and drown due to this. Also… Because the sides of the quarry tend to be vertical, sometimes for hundreds of feet, if you float or swim away from a point where you’re able to easily pull yourself out of the water, you’re doomed without help, in an emergency situation.
Please be careful searching those quarries. Use a dry suit, if you feel like you must explore them. The first rule of diving is to NEVER dive alone!! Don’t do it! It’s stupid and dangerous. Be smart. If you’re on YouRube, you’re a rolemodel to someone. Be responsible with that title.

I live in the Limestone capital of the world so there’s a lot of quarries here. It’s kind of a tradition to jump off into the water. One of the best around here is called IceBox because the water is freezing. This was an awesome video!

I grew up in Illinois where there are quite a few quarries and such that have been abandoned and filled up with water. Not just Illinois, but quarries in general are the perfect place to "get rid" of "things" you no longer want because the access is usually limited, and they are extremely deep. I personally know of a quarry somewhere in Illinois that holds the remains of a 1980 Trans Am that was "stolen" in the mid 80s and it ended up at the bottom of a quarry for the insurance money. It wasn’t me or my car, but I know its true.
