Exploring A Huge Old North Carolina Gold Mine Operation

Exploring A Huge Old North Carolina Gold Mine Operation

Out and about exploring a pre-Civil War era gold mining operation deep in the mountains of North Carolina is on tap for tonight. Please join me, Matt and Thomas as we set out on a reconnaissance of the huge property to determine the best approach to explore and try to learn more about the property in the few days that we have to explore. This is the first of a series of videos where we investigate the property by metal detecting old homesites, prospect for gold, metal detect the mining operations and even attempt to open up some of the old mine shafts.

I would like to know what mining property this is: I have snooped through a lot of them over time there in NC. By the way, I own 400 acres of valuable gold mining property in the Concord NC area.

My guess, you were near the old Argo or Portis mines. Argo would be my first guess. There used to be a RR track that ran from there over to around Cooper Road. Tim has opened up the place around the corner from the Old Portis Mine that’s also opened to prospecting. Both have gold.

  28. Irate Puffin on October 25, 2022 at 9:32 am

I’d so love to be running around those woods! Hearing a guy with a NC accent makes me think of home. I’ve mostly traded mine for a Texan one but I get it back when I hear someone else with it.

I’m gonna guess that this is in the Uwharrie Mountain region of North Carolina? The Uwharries are an ancient chain of volcanic mountains in central NC that covers approx. 50,000 acres of land in Montgomery, Randolph and Davidson Counties. The images in this video resemble the area as the peaks although steep in some areas barely exceed 1,000′ in elevation. Geologist say that millions of years ago that the Uwharries were many thousands of feet high but erosion and other factors left them as mostly large hills today. They are distinctive though as you see them off in the distance. The Uwharries were home to some of the earliest gold deposits in the US. After gold was discovered in nearby Cabarrus County at the Reed property in 1799, people began looking the surrounding area, mainly the creeks for what is known as "placer mining". As the easy surface gold became harder to find large investors formed mining companies ti dig for gold which was found to be locked in with the white quartz veins that dot the area. The first lode deposit mined in the state was at the Barringer Mine in adjacent Stanly County, NC. Montgomery County where most of the Uwharrie National Forest lies had several famous mines such as the Russel, Coggins, Saunders to name a few. I once stumbled across an old unnamed prospect while hiking there and there was an old German ore bucket still sitting onto a pile of ore beside a vertical shaft. Other minerals are also found in the Uwharries such as beautiful quartz crystals usually clear or milky but on rare occasions, smoky to amethyst tinted, pyrite, anatase, pyrophyllite, hematite, minor silver and copper minerals to name a few. There are several very nice campgrounds that the state manages that charge fees to camp some primitive with nothing but a bare spot maybe a porta-potty, fire pit and table but a couple others with very nice bath houses complete with showers, etc. Anyone who loves the outdoors and rockhounding certainly should visit this area.

Here in Germany, I am safe! The only paranormal creatures in the forests here are other metal detectorists, but in the U.S. Bigfoot really is something to worry about!!
