Back in 1966 and 67 I was with the Boy Scouts in Silver Spring and we would camp at Great Falls….back then the parking lot near the lock house was gravel….at the back of it was a path that lead into the woods parallel to the canal…….maybe a mile up it you would veer off it to the left and on the backside of a rise was a mine entrance…..if you slid in on your stomach for about 15ft ….you would come into a large square tunnel…..it went back maybe 20 yards to where it had collapsed…..off to the left was a smaller chamber…..we explored every inch of it…..came back a couple of times. This was apparently before other kids knew of it….there was no graffiti or trash……on the surface behind the mine where you could see the ground had collapsed ……there were old rail tracks and wheel carriages that mine carts would have ridden on strewn about…..Funny back then, no thought of safety. Remember it like yesterday.
