That container looks like a top to a lantern?

The moonshiners did not like the #13 mason jars. They were superstitious and didn’t like the number. I’d love to find a #13 Mason jar

In reference to the Blue Willow tea/coffee cup you found …
To be a true "Blue Willow" pattern, it must have the following elements: pagoda, apple tree, bridge, willow tree, fence, cottage on island and a pair of turtle doves.

"The Legend of the Blue Willow"
    (The Blue Willow plate.)
Long ago, in the days when China was ruled by emperors, a Chinese manderin,Tso Ling, lived in the magnificent pagoda under the branches of the apple tree on the right of the bridge, over which droops the famous willow tree, and in front of which is seen the graceful lines of the fence. Tso Ling was the father of a beautiful girl, Kwang-se, who was the promised bride of an old but wealthy merchant. The girl, however, fell in love with Chang, her father’s clerk. The lovers eloped across the sea to the cottage on the island. The mandarin pursued and caught the lovers and was about to have them killed when the gods transformed them into a pair of turtle doves. These are the doves seen gazing into each other’s eyes at the top of the design on the plates.
Blue Willow China, in its present form originated in the United Kingdom (England) in 1790 by Thomas Turner at Caughley Pottery Works in Shropshire.
A lengthy and old Staffordshire poem of the pattern concludes with the verse:

"In the oft quoted plate two birds are perceived,
    High in the heaven above:
These are the spirits of Chang and Kwang-se,
A twin pair forever in love".

I have a couple questions? What do you do with the more decorative pieces of broken dinner ware? Second question. Has anyone told you, that you look a lot like Tom Petty?

I have what looks to be a pint bottle, or half pint, and the neck of it isn’t straight and it’s a cork bottle. The glass has air bubbles in it but I don’t know how old it is cause it could be teens 20s or 1800s or older but I don’t know cause I can’t find anything that’s exactly like it on the web…

  16. Rhondaitis on October 1, 2022 at 8:09 am

I love seeing all the tiny bottles, especially the perfume bottles ❣️

Another stoopid porn ad 2 weeks ago on this comment thread. I’ve never seen this occur before. What’s going on?! P.S. I just "reported" it on the actual comment. Hope it helps make it go away.

Moonshiners in my area of Alabama would bury their money in mason jars to hide it from the revenuer man.

    Nice!

  22. Kim Sellers on October 1, 2022 at 8:15 am

It strikes me that with the exception of beer and alcohol bottles, most of the bottles of the time seem rather small. When bottles were perhaps more difficult to make, why didn’t they make bottles bigger so they didn’t have to make as many? Was it just a marketing thing or was there another reason for that? Home canning was certainly larger than those commercial little pickle and water bottles. Maybe the larger bottles broke more easily?

  23. Laura T on October 1, 2022 at 8:15 am

    Those were very nice finds.

I know you have said that you donate most of the bottles and things to local historical societies.. When you have multiples of the same one it would be great if you would sell them on eBay so that we could have one too!

  41. Katherine Edgar on October 1, 2022 at 8:32 am

Brilliant job! Would be great to hook up with local heritage groups and do pop up exhibitions with them and your finds. You could have a creativity contest with all the broken bits and sell some to fund a small hand held metal detector, think of what you might be missing! All the best and happy digging! ✨

There’s a public park with excellent hiking/biking trails near me with a seasonal creek through it. The creek sits at the bottom of a hill of an old farm. Clearly they dumped their trash there before it was a park and I decided to climb down to it last summer (there’s a bridge over it for the trail). I pulled out loads of old bottles right on top without much digging at all. After I cleaned them up I posted a photo of my finds on FB – most were 1950s-70s. And a friend of mine who is an anthropologist absolutely ripped me a new one! He said people like me are the reason history is lost and only the experts should be digging that stuff up. We’re talking 7up bottles from the 70s and shoe polish jars from the 50s. I was hurt but also angry! I mean, seriously?? If we listened to him, no one should even pick up litter! πŸ™„

Would be cool to see an episode on what happens to many of these bottles & where they end up. I’ve been binging on a few of these videos & it looks like fun.
