Those evil American soldiers, stealing in war time after being cast in a friking war where millions lost their lives, and where the Germans wanted to control the world….These men and women suffered unimaginable horrors we as civilians will never understand…

If you don’t want treasures to be looted from your country, you probably shouldn’t start a wars, steal treasures from other countries, and murder millions of people in cold blood.
Okay, I agree that Joe Tom Meador shouldn’t have taken these art objects, but on the other side of this, the Germans blew this whole case into some issue that just hurt the family mainly of Mr. Meador. I don’t see either side of this issue without fault. The German man probably could have talked to the family first before blowing it into a major, major mess. I just think it all could have been handled differently from the start.
Im very sad the Meador family was so Entitled & disrespectful of the rightful owner. They should never have been paid anything. Its wrong. Greedy, Erogent!! 😡🇺🇸

Actually returning these items to the church in Germany is not enough. These items should be given back to the Catholic Church which is the true original owner of these items.
Could you imagine how much Art has been thrown in the trash by family members cleaning out a house that grandparents or parents have died and was thought it was junk or replica
And this is only one case. The blatant theft is astonishing. There are rules of war to prevent the pilfering, abuse of civilians, etc. Disgusting!
What would president do in the same situation? I think I know what he would do he would ship most of at home 10% for the big guy
You know what is really effed up? Imagine how many lives and debauchery it required to bring these treasures into existence. How many slaves died to create these so called, treasures? Also, how did the prewar owners of these treasures come to possess them. Are they the real original owners? Did they make them or did they steal them too? Maybe they should look into where these really came from.
I here a lot of complaints about this family, why are they not recovering the art that the university of Oklahoma has , and won’t return to the family that it was stolen from ? It’s ok for the University to keep it , but not this family
The practice of the "Spoils of War" goes back to times of prehistory. This included slavery. There are parts of the world that practice this. It is good that European humankind is evolving.
George Soros went into Jewish homes and took their stuff. He admitted it. Democrats like him. The Kennedys and other old families in the US worked with Nazis and made fortunes. I don’t see Americans complaining about them.
I’m an American who is not in any way “embarrassed” and trashing these simple soldiers is disgusting. Many were told they were allowed to take an item and most had no idea of the real value. These are men who put their lives on the line to stop a tyrant and save the world from destruction. None of those being critical here spent ten minutes in the horror of battle, watching many of their friends be blown to pieces or wondered every single day if they’d ever see their loved ones again. As for the high level officers who did this, yes, it was not a good thing but it was war! And most of those perpetrators were tried and convicted as they should have been, but it was for what they did to fellow, innocent human beings whom you weren’t about to find alive in a cave somewhere.

Who is to say it was stolen it could have very easily been purchased at the end of ww2 everything in Germany was forsale hell you could purchase a German woman for 10 cent or 2 cigarettes anything they had of value was sold before they sold themselves everything including there children
The significance of fact that these valuable items were stolen is not lost on me. It was wrong. It should not have happened. That said, the German people destroying and stealing from the entirety of Europe while they marauded in and conquered and murdered millions… …that is not a thing to justify this act of thievery… but, it is hard for me to see a way to call that crime of thievery by a Soldier anything other than re-appropriating valuables that were amoung so much more of the same on an industrial scale by Germany upon its neighbors. Nothing in me feels sorry for Germany in the loss of anything following that Dammed By God Awful and un-necessary war they manifested upon this planet. We Must Never Forget.

The reason you get the right to judge Joe Meador is because he didn’t volunteer to return the goods to the Church after the war was long over. Best case, he was told to take them to protect them. if so, he should have given back, and by not after a prolonged period of time, the goods became stolen. Worst case he stole them from the beginning. Either way, he stole them.

So the Germans looted all of Europe, with many things lost forever, yet, even an American serviceman sends things back, the government goes after him, including the German government.
It says, he was wrong to take what he took, but it was ok for serviceman to take guns, uniforms helmets and such, kinda strange, ok to steal from other solders, but not ok to take from the government
it was not an unusual thing to happen during wartime. I see it as protecting it as who knows where or how the condition would be today BUT it was stealing as sad as the whole thing was. Huh? The saints are demanding prayers to themselves? I think there’s a nut loose in her tree.

While I don’t approve of theft at all, I look at all this fuss over art stolen from a cave that originally came from a church. When the war was over, did the Germans return homes to the survivors of the Jews they had sent off to Death Camps? Did they give back their golden teeth?
This is an interesting story. I’m glad the treasures were found and returned. But I don’t have allot of sympathy for the Germans over WW2 issues. They let the SS put their hands on all these items before the Americans ever came.

They were stolen, PERIOD. The laughter from the family is a affront to all those that were honorable.
And then there’s the Native American artifacts is the Smithsonian, that they won’t give back. The British Museum has a huge amount of stolen treasures from the colonizations, that they won’t give back. There needs to be a reckoning. Looting is looting no matter who does it or where it ends up. Give it back.

Wish I knew a treasure hunter . As a child the basement of the wash room caved in . We were told not to tell anyone. Housing maintenance came and sealed it . Was government quarters.

Incredible story but not surprising that some American GI individuals would have been so tempted by these treasures. Being American doesn’t mean that they were above all other people when faced with such splendid treasures and easy to take home. It’s almost miraculous that they were finally recovered.

I find it funny that top brass of the allies kept the huge gold and silver stockpiles Germany stole from citizens yet complains and prosecutes when a lowly soldier does it. The allied government stole billions from the hidden treasures Hitler had amased. Stolen art gets sold by Christies and Sotheby all the time. Museums make money from things they’ve stolen from grave robbing over the decades.
