The Lost Silver Mine of Southern Illinois

The Lost Silver Mine of Southern Illinois

Join me as I go on a hike to the Lost Silver Mine of Southern Illinois located very close to Old Stoneface in Saline County. I’ve been invited by two local history buffs, Brian DeNeal of Springhouse magazine and Saline County Historical Society President Mark Motsinger.

Brian planned to drop his GoPro down the well tied to a cord and see what was down there. It was a hot and humid walk over some challenging terrain with a bit of bushwhacking but we found the Mine and successfully sent the remote camera down. This is what we saw.

I wonder if they actually found any silver, or if the description that it was a silver mine is accurate.. who knows. My guess is they dug during a dry period that probably lasted one or several years.

Illinois has silver deposits but most are not in any concentration as to make mining it profitable. What is found is mostly a by product of floriate mining. I have found silver nuggets on the sandbars of the Mississippi river near St, louis. There are numerous stories of people finding isolated deposits. Back in the 80’s I met a guy, while out rock hunting, that found a deposit of a little over 5 lbs.

I might bring a generator and industrial pump there with a hose and let it pump that area out for a few days lol.

I knew there was one around that area. I ran across it when I was researching my Dennison ancestors. They lived at Eagle and Somerset.
