your timeline is right on the money ,, i search the time Waltz spent at the mine , from 1878-1884 ,he only went to the mine between 1881-1884 the dick holmes manuscript stated he return to Phoenix after killing the two soldiers this makes good logic because we know the last time he was at the mine was in the winter of 1884 the year after he killed the two soldiers,if that data is true .and i have been searching and reading about the legend for most of my life . i started at the age of 7 reading books about the LDM ,from my search your date of 1883 is correct ….! well done ..
Sounds like to me, that that’s all it really is …a superstition! Now. If there was any big gold those old timers have cleaned it all out back then. Also if there were a bunch of gold residing in those mountains, the government would have marked it their territory and banned anyone from digging and searching by now lmao!
