Treasure Legends of Virginia
What is it about tales of lost treasure that quickens the pulse and makes the heart skip? Perhaps the treasure hunter’s quest for the lost chest of gold stands as a symbol…a symbol of all that we have not done but would always do if given a chance. In our dreams of treasure we live during an age of discovery, when people did things for the sake of doing them, went places simply because no one had been there before. The treasure hunter personifies that sense of adventure and daring in each of us that only awaits the call to glory. Pirate gold, hidden caves, secret rooms, treasure maps; these are the things of which dreams are made, and yet they do exist, waiting just off stage in the mist of romance.
Treasure hunters unearth an estimated $25 million worth of treasure each year. According to some estimates, at least $4 billion worth of lost treasure is scattered throughout the country and about $22 billion more lies in relatively shallow water just off the coast.
Few states have been as fortunate as Virginia when it comes to treasure. Like golden autumn leaves, treasure lies heavy on Virginia. From the Atlantic to the mountains, men and women have consigned their riches to the safety of the earth or lost them in the violent seas. This is the story of the men and women who built Virginia, of the treasures they left, and was written in the hope that it will inspire one bold heart to uncover the riches of the centuries.
