What does gold look like in rocks_ Gold bearing rock identification.

What does natural raw gold look like in rocks? What does gold ore really look like? In this video you will learn about gold bearing rock identification. You will see lots of high grade gold ore, but also some more moderate grades of ore. I will show ores that are both easy to see the gold and ones that are more difficult.
For those who want to learn more about Prospecting and finding gold check out my book, Fists full of Gold. It’s an encyclopedia of everything on the topic of prospecting. It’s available on Amazon. (Affiliate) You can find it at:

Enjoyed your video, thanks. I went hiking with some friends in San Bernardo Mts. and we found a huge boulder of quartz with gold veins thru it. We thought naw it couldn’t be. It would have been discovered by now. Who knows.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. And you tell a lot about the rocks that you have shown. You must be a great rock hound. I live in northern california. Not very far from mallakoff diggings where they hydrolicked for some years. Also I had lived by Moores flats where they moved the town and the cemetery 3 times back in the 1800’s. They also hydraulic mined. It is all so very interesting.keep up all the great stories.

I often ponder on exactly where gold is formed and how it happens. They say that it’s understood but still seems like an enigma to me. Why is it often found with quartz? There couldn’t be 2 more different types of elements than gold and quartz. Granite, basalt and greenstone also.
Why is it always alongside these rocks and minerals? I’ve heard it said that gold forms in volcanos and I’ve heard that it’s from exploding stars.
Anyway…. It’s the enigma that fascinates me. πŸͺ™

Is the gold/telluride (calaverite) brittle? Or would it still be malleable?

Man i been away in Brazil for two years…. stumbled across this old video. Sure brought back an awful lot of memories!!! Stuff i just clean forgot about! Time to head back home to my local gold fields and pick up a few more specimens of that shiny yellow in the nasty reddish brown quartz . And possibly sell several old pieces that have visible gold. Too bad the pictures weren’t a bit more clear.

I come from a family of Jewelers &my dad worked with acid testing quite bit. He would buy estates & test all the gold stuff, deliver watches & watch movements to Jewelry people who were interested in gold. My mom would grab all the jewels that he would throw away & make stuff out of them. I developed a love for gold in Quartz. She bought a bunch of charms. earrings, pendants & Victorian cane tops. I have never cared about prospecting or digging up mountains to make myself rich, but the beauty of the pieces of Gold in quartz grabs me. Now it is very scarce. Sadly they didn’t leave any for me. My dad used to take the gold to the San Francisco mint for $35/oz.
