Where is Blackbeard's Treasure? (Pirates and Gold of the Caribbean)

Where is Blackbeard's Treasure? (Pirates and Gold of the Caribbean)

Where is Blackbeard’s treasure hidden? This documentary looks at the legend of the infamous 18th Century pirate Edward Teach (Thatch). Better known to us as Blackbeard, in the 300 years that have passed since his death, we are still no closer to discovering his treasure. It’s told that Blackbeard buried extraordinary amounts of ill gotten gold and silver on islands throughout the Caribbean. But is this a tale based more in myth than reality? We seek to separate fact from fiction to identify what treasure he may have had and where it could be hidden today.

Journey with us across the Caribbean, North Carolina and the east coast of America, to discover if old pirate tales of adventure on the high seas, black flags, treasure maps and chests of gold have any basis in reality.

Going off of the fact that he most likely buried it off of the Carolina coast, you’ll most likely never find it. The surf on the outer banks is so gnarly and changes so frequently that it is probably not on land anymore, but it is possible that a chest can wash up on a bank one day, its happened before.

We have 2 varying stories here in SWFL both amalgamations of what is likely the same story. One is of a pirate named Black Caesar who was an escaped slave who served among Blackbeard’s crew who settled somewhere in the Florida Keys after Blackbeard’s demise. The other is Black Augustus supposedly a Portuguese pirate who sailed under the flag of Gasparilla who did the same except further north on Black Island which is named after him. The stories are so intertwined that I believe if there is any truth to them they are likely the same person, but either way according to lore Black Augustus became a hermit and upon his death left word with a local farmer to dig on one corner of his cabin where a large "ball of gold" was found. According to legend the farmer was swindled by another local who went on to become a wealthy land owner. Fun story, but who knows how much of either story is true?

It’s funny that Blackbeard’s treasure is buried anywhere between the Gulf coast and the Outerbanks of North Carolina. I had an apprentice from Carolina who was adamant he knew where the treasure was because he could place a published map in the inlets of the Albemarle sound of North Carolina. I asked him about his source and he then admitted he found it in a book about Blackbeard. I quizzed him about the authenticity of the map and the fact that it was published but to no avail. He was sure he was the only one who knew the location. You’ve got to love it.
